Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express Bimal Roy's classic about a poor peasant, played by the incomparable Balraj Sahni, whose struggles to rise out of debt is a heartrending picture of a country where inequalities were growing inexorably. Aug 16, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member on rotten tomatoes 73% liked it avg rating 3.8 after i gave 5 stars what a shame on people who rated a classic cult like this. watch this movie for a poor farmer who wanna get off from his debt to get his mortgage land back balraj sahni played one of the memorable role, for me his acting was 100/100, IN LAST WATCH THIS MOVIE FOR BIMAL ROY- A DIAMOND OF INDIAN CINEMA WHOSE MOVIE WILL SHINE EVER. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Bimal Roy's classic was an important film in many aspects. The film was a neo-socialist film, which paved way for similar such films in the 1950s. The Hindi film exposed the plight of the farmers right after independence, when the country was still trying to establish itself as an independent country. The film also was the first Indian film to win an award at the prestigious Cannes film festival. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is the greatest movie that has come out of hindi cinema. The reality of how oppressed farmers were in India has been so well portrayed by Bimal Roy. Balraj Sahni and Nirupama Roy has played their part so brilliantly. This movie leaves me tear each time I watch it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Do Bigha Zamin is very much drama and the actors did a great job in portraying their respective characters. The performances which stand out most are Balraj Sahni as the farmer Shambu, the protagonist of the story, and the child actor Rattan Kumar as his son Kanhaiya. Nirupa Roy also gave a very good performance as Shambu's wife Paro. As for Bimal Roy's direction, the film has one of the best depictions of poverty I've ever seen, covering both rural poverty in a Bengali village and urban poverty in Calcutta. The film's ending was also powerful and it was overall a very moving film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
