Critics Consensus

Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead has some fun with the original film's still-sturdy premise, but it's hard not to wonder whether a remake was really necessary.

Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) June Squibb is just wonderful in this movie. Apr 17, 2024 Full Review Liz Coopersmith AV Club Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead moves at the pace of a good sitcom. Rated: B Apr 17, 2024 Full Review Katie Walsh Tribune News Service Surprisingly authentic and fun for remake material, which is naturally formulaic. It’s the focus on character work that lets this one sing, and it should make a star out of Jones, who, like her character, manages to hold it all together. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 13, 2024 Full Review Mark Keizer MovieWeb Babysitter, despite its winning cast, is not as nervy as it thinks it is, squandering its central idea and leaving us with a remake that is pleasant if underachieving. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 20, 2024 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed It won’t take the place of the original any time soon, but I was never bored. May 22, 2024 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead is comatose with a lack of imagination. This unnecessary remake of the 1991 film is in many ways worse than the original film because the remake adds terrible racial jokes and more moronic scenarios. Kt26 Funny movie for the gen x Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/17/24 Full Review Shakira This was such a great spin off from the first one but with more seasoning. Super hilarious. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Jesus Gonzalez basically the exact same premise as the original in a modern take, it's not great but not terrible either just ok Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review APRIL Great update on a childhood classic and I am quickly becoming a fan of Ms Pat! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review JONATHAN L Nope ..... just nope ......end of discussion the original all the way.... The only likable character in this movie is the crazy babysitter. And that says a lot. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/20/24 Full Review deskby t I liked it. I Loved the original and its one of my favorites. This new one is really good. The actors and acting was on point and the story was done very well. I liked that they left some of the original parts in but they changed a few. That was also done well BUT whoever edited it put the soundtrack WAY too loud over the speaking parts making it hard to hear and follow the story line. It was like they wanted you to hear the music,(which was also good), more than they wanted you to hear the dialog. I mean really? I had to put on the subtitles just to know what they were saying. Sometimes it would be so loud I thought " did they do this on purpose?" Other than that I REALLY liked the remake and I LOVED THE CAMEO BY THE ORIGINAL ROSE!! Great job! Would have given it 4 1/2 or 5 stars if I could've heard them speaking over the music. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Read all reviews
