When the sensible Joan Colby (Ann Harding) learns that her younger sister is about to wed, she begins to feel like she will never find a suitable spouse, so she devises a scheme to make freewheeling bachelor John Fletcher (William Powell) propose to her. The plan works like a charm, and John and Joan are soon man and wife, but John later learns that his wife deceived him into marrying her. He immediately leaves Joan -- who now must think of another brilliant plot if she is to win John back.
