      Movie Info

The recently deceased Mona Dearly (Bette Midler) was many things: an abusive wife, a domineering mother, a loud-mouthed neighbor and a violent malcontent. So when her car and corpse are discovered in the Hudson River, police Chief Wyatt Rash (Danny DeVito) immediately suspects murder rather than an accident. But, since the whole community of Verplanck, N.Y., shares a deep hatred for this unceasingly spiteful woman, Rash finds his murder investigation overwhelmed with potential suspects.

Drowning Mona doesn't leave an impression on you and will be forgotten quickly. Just not funny.

Drowning Mona is an odd film. One on hand the cast are impressive and offer something unconventional. The real issue is the story line and the film-making style. The just treads water for the duration and never asks more from its cast. Bette Midler needed a juicer villainous showcase and she is underused. The film attempts to complicate the film with red herrings but it never succeeds at this. The film becomes an ensemble piece a little too late and spending more time on the Affleck character wasn't the most inspired choice. DeVito was a nice inclusion but he can only do so much with so little. Drowning Mona needed to be darker or more humorous with its oddball characters to be successful. The film had potential but has vanished since release. 01/07/2020

Borrows a lot from drawing room/dinner theater mysteries because everyone but everyone wants to see the victim dead ... and transports the action to some po-dunk upstate New York town. Alas the scenery change - nor the sad Yugo as the victim of countless sad jokes - can jump start the inertia felt here.
