What to Know

Critics Consensus

An ambitious yet imperfect thriller, Eagles of the Republic blends old fashioned suspense, dark political satire, and romance into a fitfully entertaining portrait of celebrity and moral compromise.

If the movie’s conclusion is more along the lines of Voltaire than it is to, say, Costa-Gavras’ 'Z,' the hair-raising route it takes to get George to a spot of tentative complacency is memorable and eye-opening. Go to Full Review

Eagles of the Republic is a sturdy and enjoyable mainstream thriller. It might sport the right ideology at heart, but one that doesn’t cut deep enough. Go to Full Review

Saleh and Fares shrewdly exploit the material’s comic possibilities as well as its dramatic ones. They’ve wrought an entertaining portrait of a celebrity whose vices and vanities persist even under life-threatening circumstances. Go to Full Review

Its topic-expansion can meander a bit too long, but it’s forgiven once you reach the last thirty minutes, in which the question "How did we get here?" is rocketed into a climactic tornado that is befitting for a satire of this magnitude. Go to Full Review

Accrues more dramatic power when the political begins to encroach on the personal... Eagles of the Republic is striking in its cynicism, precisely because this cynicism doesn’t arrive out of the blue. Go to Full Review

Hesham E @RT10416407 3d This film is an absolute laughing stock. It is written and directed by a filmmaker of Egyptian descent who demonstrates absolutely zero understanding of Egyptian culture or the local mentality. What was likely intended as a serious political thriller ends up playing out like an unintentional farce. The execution is severely flawed from start to finish. The pacing is agonizing, as the director wastes hours on sluggish, aimless scenes that do nothing to advance the plot. Instead of building genuine suspense, the narrative abruptly shifts into an unearned burst of violence at the very end, leaving the audience alienated rather than thrilled. Additionally, the movie suffers from a severe identity crisis. It clumsily wavers between political satire and dark drama. This hesitation dilutes the narrative, stripping away the tension required for a genuine thriller and leaving behind a remarkably shallow storyline.
