Wayne K There was a time when horror films took themselves dead seriously, resulting in some of the most iconic movies and characters in cinematic history, but also a lot of dreck. Then horror films became self-aware, mocking and parodying the many trope of the genre, which resulted in some really good films, and tonnes of dreck. Now we get self-referential horror films that are so on-the-nose and smugly self-satisfied that they forget or ignore many of the fundamentals of storytelling in favour of 4th wall breaks and ‘witty references’, and this has, as far as I can tell, resulted in no good films, and nothing but dreck. Eating Miss Campbell might have its humorous moments here and there, and its clear the cast are having a blast. With Troma Entertainment producing, you don’t expect state of the art practical effects, but the filmmakers have done well on what must have been a very limited budget. But the jokes are little more than blatant nods to the many clichés of the horror genre, and a lot of emphasis is put on the apparent Americanisation of British schools, but all the film has to say about that it could result in school shootings. This is a topic that’s played for laughs, but they never come because nothing smart, witty or revelatory is said about it. You can blame things like poor effects, bad lighting, lack of locations and many other factors on the lack of money or resources, but the script is something that you have total control over, and as such is the element that should have the most care and attention put into it. If you can’t even write good jokes or interesting scenarios, then the film stands no chance whatsoever. It's almost as if the actors realise this, as so many them oversell every single gag like they have no faith in it working on its own merits. An interesting idea, but a totally bungled execution, no pun intended. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review g j Self aware dreck is a bit like earnestly produced dreck, only more boring.
