Steve S Eddy Duchin is a pharmacist turned concert pianist. Fresh out of pharmacy school, young Eddy Duchin travels to New York in the 1920s to take a job playing piano at a prestigious casino in Manhattan. There, he makes a good impression on the audiences and attracts several important patrons. A wealthy socialite, Marjorie Oelrichs, turns her head to his music and becomes captivated by his artistry on the piano. She comes to meet the performer and takes a personal interest in Eddy. His mastery of the piano is recognized and he gets a steady gig at the casino. He soon invites his parents to visit him in New York and they meet Marjorie. His parents approve the marriage. But the tragedy strikes when Marjorie dies soon after giving birth to their child. Devastated, Eddy devotes himself to music and tours the world with his band. His baby boy, Peter, stays with a friend's family with a nice governess to look after the child. During the Second World War, Eddy joins the U.S. Navy and serves on a warship. After a battle in the South Pacific, Eddy plays piano for his fellow servicemen to lift their spirits and also teaches a young boy to play chopsticks on the piano. After the war he comes back to New York to visit his son Peter and meets Peter's governess, Chiquita. Eddy and Chiquita eventually grow on each other after an uneasy start. Eddy is amused witnessing that his son Peter is learning to play the piano following his father's trade. Eddy gets a contract to play at the ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel. There Eddy and his band perform Aquarela do Brasil and make the crowd happy. But suddenly Eddie's hand freezes and he is unable to complete his playing. Eddy is devastated by his sudden disability. He eventually is diagnosed with a fatal illness and learns that he has no more than a year to live. Eddy marries Chiquita and tells his son that soon he'll be "going away." Father and son play piano duo together and Eddy is glad that his son is becoming a good entertainer. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/20/25 Full Review jimmy b It's great to watch due to CinemaScope and Technicolor from Columbia, the little studio that could. Kim Novak never looked more glamorous. It's a shame she actually only has a supporting rather than starring role, due to her character's death early on.
