For better and for worse, Edge of Darkness offers vintage Mel Gibson, working within the familiar framework of a bloody revenge thriller.

Ed Koch The Atlantic The acting, with the exception of Bojana Novakovic, adds nothing to the trite plot. Bryan S This is much better than the formulaic 'Taken' movies. The acting is superb. If you're a father of a daughter, you'll definitely feel this one in your heart. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review DanTheMan 2 While somewhat uneven, meandering and ultimately unnecessary, I can't deny that this transatlantic revamp of Edge of Darkness actually has a lot of emotional pull, one that succeeds thanks in large part to its respect to the source material. Despite the story having been majorly truncated to fit the 2-hour runtime, Martin Campbell handles the material with the same care and attention he brought to the original; it can be brutally tense in places and will keep you on the edge of your seat till the bitter end thanks to a solid if needlessly rambling script. Where this film shines is with its two leading performances. Mel Gibson is outstanding here, bringing his full tormented game and wrestling his demons with righteous anger. Ray Winstone is the other highlight, although I wish he had way more screen time than he got, an obvious side effect of trying to streamline a nearly 6-hour television drama, many of his scenes seem to have fallen by the wayside. Unfortunately, Howard Shore's music didn't do anything for me, some of it worked, but a lot didn't, a far cry from Clapton & Kamen's original. Solid, hard-hitting and tense, there's a beautiful old-school vibe to Edge of Darkness; it keeps the suspense grounded and violence brutally sudden, even if it loses steam by the end. They could have done a lot worse but I can only see this getting better upon rewatches. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Seamus M Sorry, I don't write reviews. I'm old & I like what I like. But this movie is a decent, modern crime noir movie that involves local law enforcement, US covert nuclear weapon production and MURDER! This movie doesn't have super heroes or huge explosions but does, at least, have some decent acting, dialogue & just a little bit of action. I don't need a building falling down or a million bad guys getting killed. A decent story with a little friction would be cool. This movie was really good. I felt great that the bad guys got theirs and I felt sad the good guys had a final, heartfelt connection. I like this movie a lot Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/06/24 Full Review KB B I thought this was a very engaging thriller with a great storyline. It's definitely worth the watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/24/24 Full Review Ari V Get's a little clustered toward the end and perhaps a tad too self-righteous. E.g. The irony of a hollywood star—or US gov employee for that matter—talking about "never tak[ing] anything from the bad guys" 😜. It transcends these flaws however—as well as its format's limitations—through various rather advanced little touches peppered throughout. Capped off with that walk at the end, which was especially resonant for me. My biggest aspuration in life being to earn such a walk. The successful setup and communication of that moment, bringing myb rating up from 3.25-3.75/5 to 4.25/5 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review Mark B I feel like maybe the actors reputation outside of the fine is coloring the reviews negatively. The acting was very good and the story was tense. Overall a very good movie. Mel Gibsons personal behavior certainly is problematic but he can act.
