Jonathan Romney Screen International A strong feminist angle gives the film a powerful currency and the three young leads are compelling in different ways – most impressively perhaps, singer and actor Villa. Sep 25, 2024 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed A bit of a tighter script, some more decisive direction, and more pinpointed performances would have made a world of difference here. As it is, the film is middle of the road at best. Aug 28, 2025 Full Review Marta Medina mundoCine A wailing that, though it promises to echo, fades into a distant whisper. [Full Review in Spanish] Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 17, 2025 Full Review Steve Erickson Arts Fuse For all of The Wailing‘s strengths, it feels derivative. Aug 15, 2025 Full Review Morris Yang In Review Online While The Wailing does venture to be sufficiently, even exceedingly, eerie at times, its central gimmick lacks clear definition. Aug 12, 2025 Full Review Scott Phillips Forbes I hate the term “elevated horror”. It implies horror films can’t reach the heights of non-genre cinema. I prefer to consider The Wailing a piece of “ambitious horror”. Label it as you wish. It may be the best horror film of the year (in any language). Aug 7, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Gabriel S Director Pedro Martín-Calero debuts with the psychological thriller and haunting horror El Llanto, The Wailing for international audiences, perhaps solidifying his entry into the horror industry. The film, though winning a Best Director Award for Pedro, is strong on the horror aspect but convoluted. The story follows three timelines closely linked by a haunting cry of despair. Unbeknowst to them, their stories are connect through a horrible presence tied to an eerie building. Slow-driven, The Wailing is strong on its direction drive and cinematography. Creepy and scary at times, for real, and super solid in terms of depicting different timelines at different time eras. The not-so-good points have to do with the storyline itself. It felt open and holes seem to creep into the plot points, some actions and events too broad for our understanding, culminating into a main protagonist that is completely absent of a concrete backstory. The Wailing might be refreshing in some aspects, but leaves us a bit too much in the dark with what is going on and has happened in past events, much of this due to a lack of clear exposition into the main antagonists past and intents. Solid in keeping us on the edge, but lacking in cohesion. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review B P A Sensationally Scary Ghost Story Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/25/25 Full Review Jakov S Bland supernatural thriller bogged down by clumsy dialogue, forgettable characters and silly attempts to scare. It throws in creepy imagery and vague symbols without actually building a clear message. It ends up feeling hollow, like it’s trying to be deep but doesn’t know what it’s trying to say. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Ana G the movie had potential but fell short in what they wanted to do, also I don't like movies when nobody survives Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/26/25 Full Review Read all reviews
