Kristy Puchko IGN Movies A promising premise sets a solid stage for terror. Oct 19, 2019 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times "Eli" has a strong payoff too with a memorably intense final 15 minutes. But that roaring finish feels like it should come much earlier in the picture. The story ends just when it's finally going somewhere. Oct 18, 2019 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com We have no real idea what's going on through most of Eli, which results in a film that is more often confusing than frightening. Ato L Absolutely terrible, the begging was watchable but quickly turned into a disappointing and rather stupid ending, wouldn’t recommend… Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/17/24 Full Review Alex P I enjoy watching horror movies. Watching "Eli" was more like for fun and because i had some spare time, but i quikly got invested. Spoilers ahead!!🛑 But here is the thing. I seperated the movie into three parts. The first one being the introduction to the main characters(Eli played by Charlie Shotwell and his parents played by Kelly Reilly and Max Martini)and also the first impression with the house and Dr. Isabella Horn (portrayed by Lily Taylor). In the begining i was quite confused, i have to admit, with Eli's condition but quickly caught on with the whole auto-immune disease and was intrested immetiadely and almost excited about what would come next. I really liked the concept of the old house in the middle of nowhere and the technology that it occupied. Also i enjoyed the scene with that noise "from the pipes" and the look Dr Isabella gave the family. For some reason that scene spooked me and just made it more interesting and thrilling. The second part which was my personal favorite, was the first two stages of the so called treatment. The movie takes a huge turn for the better after Eli starts hallucinating and thinking that he is seeing ghosts. The make up and CGI for the ghosts is a good touch and the few scenes we get from them makes them all the more creepy and musterious. I think it could've been even better with a little more jumpscares here and there. Another favorite scene from the second part which i would like to hope is not only for me, is the part when Eli gets dragged outside by the ghosts who we know are the previous patients who didn't survive the "treatment". That part facinated me because Eli has some insight of what that doctor was doing to him and thought that maybe they were trying to help him and save him instead of killing him. At this point the audience is most likely imagining that it's the evil doctor who manipulates the parents and kills the children keeping their souls lokced in the house or just expirimenting on them and afterwards killing them. And up to this point there is a huge build up to the story, making the audience nervous and anxious. The third part starts from the moment Eli steps into Dr Isabella's room and procceds to find that hidden door that leads to the badement. That's where i lose it when the church gets involved. I think the betrayal of the parents was amazing and unexpected at the same time. But where i completely lose it and get back to sqaure one is when he realizes he isn't actually sick and can breath just fine. From then on it just gets more and more dissapointing. The plot twist is big but not well thought and the involvment with the devil and the lord gives the conjuring vibes which am not saying is bad but the storyline wasn't building up for that, or at least it didn't feel like it was. I think with making it about the devil and his children there is no point to the whole story with the ghosts. It just feels like there wasn't much purpose in the ghost children. Although the way they made the skin like that was pretty realistic the eyes was just a little to much. And the quick change of attitude Eli had was a bit surprising. Anyhow i think a way i could explaine this movie in a sentence would be i signed up for something and got something else. It's a big let down for me especially torwards the end. I would recommened it because a horror movie is a horror movie. It started really mysterious it became horror and triller and it ended in comedy. Making me question if i enjoy horror after all...
