Audience Member The ending was a bit sudden but overall a decent film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I found this little gem on Netflix. The title character has a layabout old man for a husband and Western-style aspirations, so she takes matters into her own hands to gain a social status among her neighbors. Her initiative is nice to see, but in the end, the material possessions she's able to provide bring only transitory happiness--as they do for everyone. It's well worth the 90 minutes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Ermo is my idol, loved her! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member tallarines trenzados y mujeres independientes Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Stylistically got fifth generation written all over it, but not so thematically since it explicitly deals with current issues. A very poignant critique of the growing materialism in contemporary China where owning the biggest TV set is an important statussymbol. Being rich may be glorious but, as in Ermo's case, the road to riches is apparently not open for everyone. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Ermo aligns in a row with Zhang Yimou's Qiu Ju(1992) and Xie fei's Xiang hun nv(1993), all tackling the theme of the awaking feminine independence in the rural China. But Ermo investigates something deeper, that is the public sphere of communicablity. The TV set, which crystalizes all Ermo's labor and efforts, dreams and desires for going out of the enclosure, signifies the failure of communicability in the final scene, when the global information ironically bores all the rural audience.
