In Madrid following World War II, cobbler Paulino (Pepe Soriano) is kidnapped by secret agents of Generalissimo Francisco Franco, because he happens to look exactly like the cruel dictator. Franco's propaganda minister (Jose Sazatornil) trains the initially unwilling Paulino to mimic Franco's voice and mannerisms to protect his leader from the anarchists who want him dead. Although Paulino misses both his wife and his mistress, he soon finds himself enjoying the subterfuge.
