kish b Nov 17 ★★★★★ Evangelion: Death (True)² is the definitive recap that every fan of the series always needed and truly deserved. This "True²" cut (the revised version featured in Revival of Evangelion, also known as the cleaned-up and re-edited Death & Rebirth) takes the highlights of the first 24 episodes, re-cuts them with surgical precision, and presents them in beautifully restored picture and sound quality that makes everything feel fresh again. The pacing is flawless, the transitions are seamless, and it completely removes the rushed, padded feel of the original 1997 Death release. What’s astonishing is what it achieves in just 68 minutes: even if you’ve seen the show a dozen times, it still manages to hit you with the same dread, melancholy, and awe you felt the first time around. The newly added and redrawn animation (especially the haunting string-quartet sequence and the childhood flashbacks of the pilots) are small masterpieces that add emotional layers that weren’t there before. Watching Death (True)² right before The End of Evangelion is, hands down, the perfect way to step back into the Evangelion universe: it reminds you why you fell in love with these characters, primes you for the emotional devastation to come, and still stands beautifully on its own. This isn’t just a recap. It’s a visual poem, a love letter from Anno to the fans, and one of the finest recap films ever made. Flawless, deeply moving, and absolutely essential.
