Critics Consensus

Ex Machina leans heavier on ideas than effects, but it's still a visually polished piece of work -- and an uncommonly engaging sci-fi feature.

Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting ...the brilliance of the film is the way we become Garland’s Turing Test subjects. Rated: 4.5/5 Apr 5, 2024 Full Review Kjerstin Johnson Bitch Media I enjoyed watching the small cast of characters conspire with and against one another within the confines of a chillingly beautiful and remote techno-bunker. Jan 27, 2021 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire A crackling good entertainment, a brainy science fiction picture executed in a clean, concise style, with a narrative as logical as it is unpredictable. May 28, 2016 Full Review Joseph Tomastik Loud and Clear Reviews It not only takes place right on that blurred line between human and AI, but also portrays the exact point where it’s finally crossed. Matt Al. Robots. Need I say more? Absolutely loved seeing this in IMAX Laser. Fully packed auditorium. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Melvin L BORing ..................... Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/03/24 Full Review Gareth v A superb debut as a director by Garland in this smart AI thriller that builds tension with it's remote setting and sly genius of its antagonist. A movie of style and smarts. One of 2014's best movies. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/30/24 Full Review Jay W This is an intelligent, thought provoking story about AI, human connections and what makes up life. Oscar Isaac does an excellent job as Nathan, the eccentric tech billionaire. He can be cool and collected one minute and completely unhinged the next. He is a man that is hard to get a read on, both chill, yet one that you would never dare to betray. In fact, the acting all around is top notch. I admire how much the film was able to with its limited budget. Its CGI rightfully won the Oscar for best visual effects, with a meager 15 million, it was a steal compared to the other nominees. The movie and the characters intelligently discuss a lot of great profound topics. The movie creates a good sense of unease and menace with its setting and characters. But it doesn't do much beyond that. It is only these 4 characters in the one setting the whole time. And most of the movie just consists of talking about their A. I. invention. That's all it is. Nothing more, nothing less. On the positive, it is a good 1hr 43-minute runtime. But I feel they don't do much beyond just discussing it. It has a very good ending, and it is well put together. The movie tackles a lot of profound topics, but it doesn't go much beyond that. Still a good time, just know what you're getting in to. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review 3D W Deep, created by a genius Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/08/24 Full Review Garrett B A solid sci-fi thriller Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews
