Critics Consensus

With assured style that's at times reminiscent of the best '90s nail-biting thrillers, Fair Play juxtaposes premarital disharmony with greed and gender politics in the cutthroat finance world.

Claudia Puig FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Initially it works, and then it devolves into something so extreme that it becomes borderline silly. Oct 21, 2023 Full Review Brent Simon AV Club A film with a distinctive personality and an eagerness to dig around in the real-world sandbox and ask questions for which it knows there is no single, pat set of answers. Fair Play never stops making moves, which makes even its missteps feel refreshing. Rated: B Oct 15, 2023 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday It's one of the more incisive and powerfully made movies about relationship dynamics in a good long while. Rated: 4/4 Oct 13, 2023 Full Review James Preston Poole Discussing Film Turning this power-driven human drama into a sweaty palm, pulse-pounding thriller may be one of the most subversive moves we’ve seen a filmmaker make recently. Roy J Now this satisfied my fix for an original thriller. Loved every minute of it. Thrilling and entertaining. Ladies, confirm your man isn't a closeted incel before you say yes. Phoebe Dynevor is an actress to look out for. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/23 Full Review Ghederick Eshmont Despite periodically succumbing to heavy handed, contrived gender politics, Chloe Domont’s control over the story is unrelenting & brilliant. A hallmark film for the rise of the working professional Millennial. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/08/23 Full Review Jeff W Horrible, shallow, self-absorbed, materialistic people being horrible, shallow, self-absorbed, and materialistic. The only thing I enjoyed was seeing them getting exactly what they deserved. Are we supposed empathize with or cheer for anyone in this stupid film? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/04/24 Full Review julie b Moral of the story is don’t get romantically involved with coworkers…I love movies that are able to create so much intensity and tension over micro events, so overall this worked for me. I really loved how you could tangibly feel and empathize with what both sides of this war were feeling, rather than being a one sided perspective. Falls shy of 3.5 stars because the ending cheapened it for me. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Catalin L A well done and acted movie, but the forced way it ends, it leaves you with the conclusion that the career at a corporation is more important than your personal life. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/21/24 Full Review Polly G It wasn't a thriller. It was 2 people putting money ahead of everything else in their life. You start off sympathizing with them hoping they survive as a couple but then the stupid things each one thinks, then actually says, just shows neither is grown enough to have a partner. SPOILERS: Her first mistake was offering her bf HELP to get promoted. How could he have any autonomy or esteem as an individual after that, professionally or as a husband? I'm a wife & would only help my husband professionally without him knowing, if he needed it. But I would always give him all the credit to everyone, him included, but because he does things all the time to help me in ways that no one needs to know about. Don't destroy someone's respectability. One of his MANY mistakes was allowing his professional goals & obsession with the boss to come before himself, & his future wife, literally pledging himself on his knees, calling the boss "his god"... cringe! After that, I could not marry him or have him working for me. Because he has no self respect, at all. Only God deserves worship. He only gets cruel & stupider after that Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
