Peter Keough Boston Globe Alternately strident and eloquent, muddled and incisive, Far From Vietnam remains compelling both as artful propaganda and as a prophetic historical artifact. Rated: 3/4 Oct 24, 2013 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker The horror of the war's direct effect, the fury of the resistance that it provoked, the self-inflicted damage to American ideals, and its over-all impact as a lever for huge social, political, and psychological fractures are packed in. Oct 24, 2013 Full Review Renata Adler New York Times A broken film doesn't really make the best statement about anything. Or utter a cry. Oct 24, 2013 Full Review Penelope Houston The Spectator Attitudes towards Vietnam aren't likely to be greatly changed by this picture: it can produce no new facts, no film to shock audiences into an altered understanding. Apr 11, 2016 Full Review Jamie S. Rich Oregonian "Far from Vietnam" drags slightly, but it remains a powerful example of what can happen when artists apply their talents to doing more than entertain. Rated: 3/5 Mar 18, 2014 Full Review James Plath Movie Metropolis It's fascinating to see a dissenting opinion and wonder where the truth really lies. Audience Member "We are far from Vietnam." But "Vietnam is fighting for us" in the "war between the poor and the rich". Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member If not for other reasons, this movie is notable especially for Godard's contribution, his dialogue with the camera. It may be considered as a starting "decentring" intervention into the field of colonial discourse, which produced visible consequnces for the concept of subjectivity. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member The brave work of seven different very influential filmmakers who, in their seven individual parts, show their sympathy for the North Vietnamese in the Vietnam conflict that was taking place at the time. A brave documentary and a direct political attack as well as a creative one, dealing with current affairs that represents the very active political times in which it was made. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Some very strong political critique, mixing styles which though without clear attribution, can be discerned and enjoyed more through that process. A roadside masque is attributed in voice-over to a play mocking LBJ and McNamara, in a playful but pointed scene typical of Marker. Resnais has Fresson discoursing directly about the war to a near mute woman, comparing it to WWII and equating the US to the German role in relation to the Vietnamese. Godard himself appears, and Ivens has some documentary footage of fiery US protest of both types that seems perhaps more timely then ever. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Magnifique documentaire, certes inégal(film collectif oblige) mais qui contient quelques petites perles comme les parties de William Klein et D'Agnès Varda.
