Audience Member I would love to see this film again, but it is so hard to find. This is filmmaker Todd Solondz's musical masterpiece about the numbing mental illness that comes with being a secondhand Woody Allen in his debut film which he also stars in. Solondz capturing himself in this is so beautifully brilliant, and shows any allusion (including my own) to Woody Allen would be wrong. The star of this film is Junk, and it's sad that Solondz was so hip to his own Junk so early in his career, but he puts Junk on full display in this one, and lets everyone know what heroine will do to you. It also asks the question, Do you prefer Junk or your doting annoying nurse-wife? Muse or lover of you? Artistic abuse or nurturer of ego? I wish there was a soundtrack available, because I've been trying to find the song "Junk" from this film, but clips are rarely found online. It's time for a Todd Solondz Criterion Collection re-release. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Todd Solondz is now my favorite director. Like his other movies (this being the first full length), It's disturbing and depressing but still ridiculously funny. Even if it's really gloomy and excessive, somehow you manage to laugh at the misfortune. The film also confirmed some thoughts I've been having that me and my friends never discuss. 9/10 but I'm giving it 5 stars. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Felt like more of a 'based on the life of the director' kinda film, and starring the director as the lead. Todd Solondz has made classics over the years and his first film that he also stars in here is not a let down at all. I found it to be one of his more funny films and still messed up as usual. Hs acting is actually really quite something else here as well, and I'm surprised he hasn't stared in more films after this. All the characters in this one are so over the top and likeably horrible to each other at times that you can't help but laugh. For anyone who is a fan of Solondz work should check this out if you can find it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Todd Solondz's first movie, in which he plays the lead role as a neurotic Jewish playwright. The shrill dialogue was testing and the story cliche at times, but it had traces of edginess. The musical aspects were horrendous. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Aw, points for Solondz debuting Woody Allen-style. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member I presume Psychiatrists would love to meet Solondz. He looks and behaves a little like Woddy Allen, looking at things from a different perception. Mostly I enjoyed the film, however getting close to a neurotic character, has a way of naturally keeping your own sane being away from him, so in a sense, it will be fun, but rarely life changing. David Nusair Reel Film Reviews It's ultimately not difficult to see why Todd Solondz has disowned his first film, Fear Anxiety and Depression... Rated: 1/4 Jun 29, 2016 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Todd Solondz's feature directing debut is a disappointingly episodic and fragmented tale, containing musical sequences, that owes its existence to the work of Woody Allen. Rated: C Sep 8, 2009 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault I'm glad I bought it, I'm glad I saw it, and I'm glad Solondz moved beyond it. Rated: B May 27, 2006 Full Review Read all reviews
