Audience Member How this film didn't get a "professional" critic to review it is beyond me. This movie is excellent and had me tearing up when I caught it on the Sundance channel. Not a typical actioner at all. It's very deep and uses action elements as symbols and metaphors in a complicated interplay displaying and resolving cultural conflict between traditional Muslim Turkish and Danish (or was it German?) liberal white culture. A masterful piece of work. It's only possible weakness - somewhat overstylized and melodramatic fight sequences. If you like strong, sexy, smart and independant women who still love men, this is your film. Not to mention the story and acting are profoundly real and touching. Semra Turan stars as Aicha, a hot blooded Turkish-Danish teenage girl whose one great passion is the martial arts. A great coming of age story mixed with "WOW" martial arts, sincere acting and great looks. If she plays this right, she is the next big international star. She watches kung fu films constantly, mimicking the moves of the stars she idolises as the films play and trains in martial arts in a casual, girls-only after-school club. Or, at least she trains there until her hot temper gets her kicked off the club. Her school coach, recognizing Aicha's natural talent, suggests that she enlist in a local, elite level club - where the Iron Monkey himself, Xian Gao, is the sifu - to further her skills but there is one problem: the club is mixed gender and Aicha's very conservative Turkish parents will never consent to their daughter training in a space shared with boys. BTW, she is not the only up and coming acter in this movie, but by far the most interesting. Notable mentions: Behruz Banissi ....as Omar " He is truly a gem in this film. Rarely do you ever see a movie that intertwines the passion of martial arts and the sacredness of the Muslim culture. And the beauty of it is that it works. It is stylish, dramatic, somewhat compelling, and at times humorous. The fight scenes are well choregraphed and the cinematography is visually appealling.
