Fireman Smokey Joe Grant (Joe E. Brown) invents a fire-extinguishing bomb he believes will change firefighting, yet is torn between waiting for a new fire to test it and playing baseball for his town's team. Convinced by the team to pitch, Joe is then frustrated when he misses a major fire. A baseball scout watching the game offers Joe a contract, but he refuses -- until his fiancée, Sally Toby (Evalyn Knapp), persuades him that he'll be able to afford to test his bomb if he accepts.

Neale B Joe E Brown, (real life minor league baseball player) the Jim Carey of his time, is a firefighter and baseball player torn between his two roles...and of course the girl. Good screwball comedy and a must for baseball fans looking for diversion during the off season. One review on IMDB says "Joe E. Brown plays a doofus who plays baseball". That's about the size of it, and I couldn't have said it better myself. Even for 1932 standards, Joe Brown's over the top antics weren't the least bit funny. The most frustrating thing about this whole film is how he's completely oblivious to how unacceptable it is for him to just blow off a World Series game, and he's the starting pitcher. This is what I get for DVRing random old movies in the middle of the night. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
