Kristin Tillotson Minneapolis Star Tribune A revealing, moving feature. Rated: 3/4 Oct 16, 2014 Full Review Stephanie Merry Washington Post Hodierne allows space for the tension to build, and the result is almost sickeningly suspenseful. Rated: 3/4 Oct 9, 2014 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Executed with considerably more polish than the crime at its center, "Fishing Without Nets" turns the hijacking drama into a morally murky contemplation of deprivation and desperation. Oct 2, 2014 Full Review Charles Mudede The Stranger (Seattle, WA) What's the problem? There are so many. For example: The film doesn't at all explain how or why the fish population was depleted or where all of the machine guns are coming from... Sep 6, 2018 Full Review Jordan Raup The Film Stage Fishing Without Nets provides a thorough examination at the motives of those involved, particularly the group's internal conflicts. Rated: B- Jun 21, 2016 Full Review Matt Patches Vanity Fair Do we really need another Somali pirates movie after Paul Greengrass's superb Captain Phillips? Turns out we do, and Cutter Hodierne's directorial debut Fishing Without Nets almost fits the bill. Jan 9, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Although the plot significantly differs from Captain Phillips, and is certainly not as compelling or suspenseful, Fishing Without Nets mirrors the American drama quite efficiently; however, it lacks in contextualisation, and oversimplifies its most important and high-potential aspect. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member 5/31/15 Amazon Video A Somali Captain Phillips but more intense and more frightening. An up close look at poverty, desperation, family, morality, fear, piracy and how they all come together. Amazingly well acted by Kenyan actors who keep the tenseness real and believable. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Very much enjoyed this movie in its San Francisco premiere. The audience applauded at the end, so I wasn't alone in my perspective. This was an eye-opening view into the desperation of the world of Somalia. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
