As a transplant from Boston, teenager Ren MacCormack gets a big dose of culture shock when he moves to a small Southern town called Bomont. A few years prior, a fatal accident involving five youths led local councilmen and a beloved clergyman to enact ordinances against loud music and dancing. Ren -- never one to toe the line -- challenges the ban, simultaneously revitalizing Bomont and falling in love with the clergyman's troubled daughter.

The dancing sequences are terrific - even the line-dancing is tolerable - but what really sells this quality reboot are the dashes of reality missing from the original.

Haven't seen the original, but this version felt like it could've been an email. I was frustrated by the lack of plot development and character development that didn't happen until nearly the end of the film. Felt like a bunch of teenage sexcapades and rebellion to make what point? The five killed teens were barely mentioned at all despite the fact that it was tragic. Everyone was insufferable for the majority of the film. I struggled to root for anyone except Miles Teller's character.
