      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Though the real-life drama it was inspired by could certainly form the basis for a worthwhile political action thriller, Formosa Betrayed isn't it.

Steve D Solid yet unremarkable thriller. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/12/23 Full Review Audience Member the film is a historically inaccurate CCP attempt to twist history and to discredit the Republic of China. as well as Chaing Kai Sheck. the film is supposed to take place in Chaings kai shecks "dictatorship" yet its well in to the 1980s when the film takes place this plot hole alone should warrant a bad rating as it dose not even make any logic how could you make a movie about a historical event when said historical event "happened" over a decade before? the movie all so suffers from being so typical in its story telling and how it paints the ROC as a "regime" as it shows soldiers arresting people out in the open and soldiers setting up check points in the middle of the capital. in another crazy scene it shows 2 soldiers coming in to a cafe while yelling and i qoute *is there any commies here?! it is your duty to report spies* as said soldiers pick out a random old man and drag him away as if there brown shirts or something. hell even the nazis after taking power did not have soldiers walk in to Cafes or shops and yell if there are commies around in reality dictatorships tend to be a lot more behind the scenes as they wait for people to come home then arrest them. the film just for this make me want to puke don't even get me started on the awful plot and characters. how ever the movie it self is filmed pretty well as there is no CGI at all and it is total eye candy. if you still want to watch the film just go on youtube and while going in know full well its full of lies its not real Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member confusing at times, but overall pretty good Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent film - great acting - great screenplay - well worth watching! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Very interesting piece of history, that keeps on evolving. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review flixster f Based on a real-life political event, it's à la James Bond flick that's quite passable. While, at times, it evidently got beyond real, that particular aspect at least didn't manage to irritate me as much as it happened to be the case with some other movies of its genre recently. Find that a bit odd because it lacked credible performances. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Joe Williams St. Louis Post-Dispatch The sturdy political thriller Formosa Betrayed is laudable for adding the voice of native Formosans to the usual two-sided debate that reaches the American media. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 15, 2010 Full Review Jeff Shannon Seattle Times It's a passionate labor of love that pointedly criticizes the U.S. government's failure to recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation, independent of mainland China. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 8, 2010 Full Review Rick Groen Globe and Mail Formosa Betrayed is a history lesson dressed up as an action movie. The lesson is pretty interesting; the movie is just the far-fetched plot it hangs on. Rated: 2/4 Apr 2, 2010 Full Review CJ Sheu The News Lens International I think the only value of this film is as an excuse for people who know more about Taiwan (like me) to talk about what actually happened. Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Formosa Betrayed works better as a history lesson than as a political thriller. Rated: C+ Sep 21, 2011 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a hopelessly uninvolving and thoroughly routine piece of work from start to finish...
