Critics Consensus

A Dame to Kill For boasts the same stylish violence and striking visual palette as the original Sin City, but lacks its predecessor's brutal impact.

David Sims AV Club To call Sin City noir is to misunderstand the genre, as perhaps Miller does. Each story ends pretty simply-in brutal fighting and murder-and lacks genuine intrigue or ambiguity. Sep 22, 2016 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire The duration between the first film and its sequel doesn't fully explain the new film's flaws, it's quite instructive when examining the reactions to them. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review David Stratton The Australian There's a bleak beauty to all of this, but also there's a reliance on stereotypes, male and female, that, while they come directly from the source material, are starting to become irritating. Rated: 3/5 Sep 22, 2014 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson The inspired comic recreation looks outstanding once again and the purposeful contrast levels are spot on to enhance the necessary atmosphere. Rated: 2/5 Jul 28, 2025 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Moments of greatness do occur, and the audience is rapt throughout, just with less unbridled enthusiasm than when we last visited Miller's world nine years ago. Rated: 3/4 Jul 29, 2022 Full Review Therese Lacson Nerdophiles Haters Gonna Hate, But I Loved Being Back in Sin City Rated: 4/5 Oct 9, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

T T I loved it, as with all the Frank Miller’s Sin City films amazing story and cinematography, brutal and satisfying. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/25 Full Review Matheus F I just can't hate this movie at all. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/11/25 Full Review John W Many are probably disappointed because the second film does not measure up to the excellent first film. However, when viewed separately in comparison to other dark action films, it is still very good. It features exciting, compelling stories and a still outstanding art style. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/26/25 Full Review Blu B This is kind of what you'd expect the first Sin City to devolve into for better or worse. This still has the exact same visuals of the first one which is easily the best part but waaay more so here it's style over any substance. the dialouge is so clunky in this. Sometimes you'll get lines on par with the first and than there are times you'll get Prequel Star Wars lines back to back in the same scene. Rourke's opening the lines are truly terrible. The editing and pacing aren't good here. The anthology aspect is what kills this here because while in the first they kept the stories relatively self contained with minimal overlap, this tries alyering all of them together Altman style and it's a complete mess. It's jumpy, incoherent at points, unfocused, and sometimes I don't even know. At least it's not The Spirit (2008) level crazy incoherent. This tried correcting what was my biggest issue with the first (too many short stories) and failed disasterously at it. This weighs down the visuals because any symbolism or visual narrative is completely lost at points and you just have cool images that don't add up to much. Some of the acting quality is shotty too. Dawnson and Maloni aren't good and trying too hard. Brolin and Levitt are great but everyone else can be forgettable or hit or miss. Everything else is just ok. Again it just doesn't makes sense half the time and only very loosely do I get the general revenge plot but it doesn't feel like the stories of Alba, Brolin, Levitt especially, and others really add up to anything. Skip this and stick with the first. I appreciate they tried making one narrative story here but it sacrificed the quality of everything the first did right. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/25 Full Review Jerod S How'd they get so many to sign on to this? Once the visuals wear off, you're left with a flat albeit bloody and sensual story. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review Brian H Still the same comic book visuals, still great lines, still some very solid acting, just not as fresh or good as the original. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review Read all reviews
