Joel C Pretty good TV movie about college kids partying hard and taking things a little too far. The performances are good and the film holds up still with it's timeless relevance of taking advantage of someone, drunk or not. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/04/21 Full Review Audience Member Just shown for a movie in class this movie did have good parts but failed at some. What was good: I thought the actors did really well, I thought the plotline was good, and the resolution while predictable was also good. What I didn't like: I didn't like some of these characters. Jordan was very boring and kinda irritating and the main character's brother was kinda weak too because of his blah personality. The other thing is kind if a big one. When the main character admitted what had happened, the nurse treated her as if this were a lame instructional video. That part was so corny it hurt! The movie was eh but had its good parts. C- Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Okay drama, exploring the issue of sex crimes on University campuses. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member "Freshman Fall" is a movie that's difficult to review and watch because the objective is to make you uncomfortable and bring to the foreground an important but unpleasant issue, which is sexual assault on college campuses. This is a film that is along the lines of an educational film without being a documentary and the objective is to inform rather than entertain and in that sense, it works. It's hard to tell if the movie is really trying to be 100% realistic as much as create a scenario that will generate discussions once it's over. The basic set up is that a young woman, Melissa Connell (Candace Cameron Bure) enters college and is raped at a party; scared and humiliated she does not report the assault until months later and when she decides to come forward and expose the perpetrator, she is shunned by her friends and realizes that her attacker is unlikely to be punished. The film follows her struggles and shows how everyone reacts to the news of the assault. When you see the movie going, you can predict a lot of the plot points and it's hard to see if this is to show off the worst scenario that would happen if you were in this position or if it's because the movie is full of clichés. It seems unrealistic, for example that none of Melissa's friends believe her and that even some of her family members are unwilling to trust that what she is saying is the truth, but it has been known to happen in real life and if you are trying to educate people on the subject, you should explore this as a possible outcome. The same goes for the harassment and rejection that she faces when she is informed that without proof, it's unlikely that the rapist, who isn't a masked attacker, but a friend of hers, will face justice. It's a cautionary tale and it's meant to frustrate you and make you sympathize with her and let you know that if you were ever faced with this situation, there are things you should and shouldn't do to protect yourself. The performances are decent and the film successfully manages to push your buttons. In some ways, it's a shame that the movie tries to do nothing but educate you on the subject of rape on campus (and even then, it only focuses on one story and there is never any doubt in your mind as to who the villain and who the victim is). It isn't the type of movie that you pop in your Dvd player for a good time, more like a movie you watch once, it makes you think and pushes you to discuss it with your peers (if you're seeing it in a classroom, probably the best way to see this) or with a close friend if you just happened to stumble upon it. It's not great cinema, but it has a goal, accomplishes it and does a tiny bit more to give you an ending that's satisfying in its own way. You probably won't love it or even like it that much but you'll be affected by it and it is a message that needs to be told. "Freshman Fall" is recommended for high-schoolers and college students, particularly if they're unaware of the subject matter explored. I'm not a person that's been particularly affected by the subject matter, aside from being able to empathize with the fictional characters I see in the movie, but I'd say that the film would also be useful to you if you happened to be a victim of a similar incident and you wanted a not-too awkward way to tell someone about it. I'm not saying it would be the best way but you've already got a really difficult truth to tell and this movie could make it a lot easier for people to understand your situation, without showing any graphic scenes of violence or nudity that is usually associated with films that do have rape as one of the major plot points. It's not a great drama but it's an important lesson that should be seen at least once. (Dvd, April 10, 2013) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought this movie was a great educational experience. I like to watch it at 3 am when nobody is awake. Awwesome fuck scenes. I tried sum stuff with my girl. Although the acting was shiit, the nudity alone more than makes up. It still suceeds in getting the ketchup out of the bottle. ;D who doesn't wanna shag the girl from full house?? DJ sure has grown up.....mmmm... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member While this was a typical made-for-TV, "men suck" kind of movie, it was at least mostly interesting. Not something I'd go out of my way to buy on DVD, but it's worth seeing once if for no other reason than it's fun to see all these 90s TV teen star types in a movie together.
