Critics Consensus

Fritz the Cat's gleeful embrace of bad taste can make for a queasy viewing experience, but Ralph Bakshi's idiosyncratic animation brings the satire and style of Robert Crumb's creation to vivid life.

Variety Staff Variety Excellent animation and montage shore up a plot which has a few howls, several chuckles and many smiles. Apr 18, 2007 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader The results, inevitably, were disappointing -- Bakshi just didn't have the money to make it right. Apr 18, 2007 Full Review Time Out Despite some ingenious effects, a generally trivial exercise that never matches the punch of the original. Jan 26, 2006 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault Overall, a very of-the-moment work, more of a snapshot than a portrait, more of a calling card than a vision. Its X rating won it some notoriety, but by today's standards it's fairly tame. Rated: B Nov 29, 2022 Full Review B.L. Panther The Spool Fritz the Cat looks back at the supposed "good times" of the 1960s with a biting sensibility that scratches out the eyes of nearly every sacred liberal institution. Nov 28, 2021 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins There's something unusually primitive about the artwork and the character designs; it's obvious that the artists aren't trying to craft a visually stunning masterpiece. Teddy B As interesting subtextually as it is upfront, 'Fritz the Cat' cements itself as a cornerstone in 70s cinema indefinitely. A particular aspect of this film that I personally enjoyed was Skip Hinnant's spot-on performance, that is the voice I hear when reading the comics. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review alan g Animated pornography. Nothing more. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review Devin H A surreal, vivid movie that doesn't have a connected story, but is full of clever satire of the 1960s with sex, drugs, violence and profanity. The animation is top notch, and some scenes have a rough, psychedelic feel Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review AlphaSnail N Best! Movie! Ever! Do not watch if you’re a puss about drugs, sex, and extreme cartoon violence Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/05/24 Full Review Noe G Fritz. The cat is a great Ralph Bakshi film. I give this film a 9/10.
