What to Know

Critics Consensus

Fritz the Cat's gleeful embrace of bad taste can make for a queasy viewing experience, but Ralph Bakshi's idiosyncratic animation brings the satire and style of Robert Crumb's creation to vivid life.

Excellent animation and montage shore up a plot which has a few howls, several chuckles and many smiles. Go to Full Review

The results, inevitably, were disappointing -- Bakshi just didn't have the money to make it right. Go to Full Review

Overall, a very of-the-moment work, more of a snapshot than a portrait, more of a calling card than a vision. Its X rating won it some notoriety, but by today's standards it's fairly tame. Go to Full Review

Fritz the Cat looks back at the supposed "good times" of the 1960s with a biting sensibility that scratches out the eyes of nearly every sacred liberal institution. Go to Full Review

There's something unusually primitive about the artwork and the character designs; it's obvious that the artists aren't trying to craft a visually stunning masterpiece. Go to Full Review

Jack F @MovieFan111 Nov 26 So, yes, I decided to watch this cuz I was curious. Definitely watch it if your high of something to get the best viewing experience (not that I was). This movie is so outdated, that it was not good. Having said that, I love the concept, and it could have been soooo much better, if it wasn't so scattered, and just stuck to a coherent story. It's also really unique and somewhat iconic, and widely considered a pioneering form of cinema. I probably won't watch it again. Watching it in 2025 is crazy. The audio in this movie is pretty underwhelming, and the plot/pacing has more to be desired. The story here is pretty raunchy and racy by today's standards. Not that I am offended easily, but this movie is just honestly insane. It has three pretty defined acts, and none of them are particularly good. See more Teddy B Jan 25 As interesting subtextually as it is upfront, 'Fritz the Cat' cements itself as a cornerstone in 70s cinema indefinitely. A particular aspect of this film that I personally enjoyed was Skip Hinnant's spot-on performance, that is the voice I hear when reading the comics. See more Read all reviews
