Critics Consensus

Visually impressive, but this latest Ripper tale is dull and far from scary.

Derek Elley Variety Anyone expecting the combo of Allen and Albert Hughes and the famed Victorian serial-killer to result in a gritty, stygian, skin-crawling horror movie will be severely disappointed Jul 29, 2008 Full Review Lisa Alspector Chicago Reader This wry, atmospheric procedural spawned by a real mystery would be thorny enough without also being an adaptation. Apr 18, 2007 Full Review Kim Newman Empire Magazine A rare, clever, horror film. Julian S It’s so divorced from any real history that it’s impossible to take it seriously. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review Garrett B One of the most tasteless films based on real events. It truly amazes me how this movie got nearly everything wrong about what really happened with the unsolved murders of Jack the Ripper. Despite the great ensemble cast, practical effects, and gritty setting, this movie is just straight up insulting to not only the poor unfortunate victims of Jack the Ripper, but even to the authorities who were involved in the case and did everything they could to catch this monster. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/23/24 Full Review Regina P I had no idea this film even existed. All of the non-blockbusters really do fly under the radar. It felt "Hollywood". It was polished and well-acted, but I didn't feel anything. They were protagonists and antagonists and a plot. Shoulder shrug. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/24 Full Review delbroox Gripping. Great aesthetics, and an interesting interpretations of the facts. Great cast of actors. Overall a great adaptation of the graphic novel. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/18/23 Full Review Lily B Very bittersweet ending, but i love it. The actors/actresses were superb and the plot had me wondering what mystery we were trying to unveil. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/23 Full Review Shay C I was surprised by this movie. I had never heard of it before, but I liked it. The subject matter is, of course, pretty gruesome and not family-friendly, but that's to be expected. It's mature and well-acted, the music adds a sufficient amount of suspense.
