Tara Brady Irish Times Hilde Coppi, played with fragile depth by Liv Lisa Fries, is a cinematic portrait for the ages. Rated: 4.5/5 Jun 26, 2025 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Liv Lisa Fries gives an outstanding performance in this heartwrenchingly powerful true story from the German home front in the second world war, directed by Andreas Dresen. Rated: 4/5 Jun 25, 2025 Full Review Kevin Maher The Times (UK) The guttural connection between Hilde and Hans takes precedence over their revolutionary acts in a film that tacitly acknowledges the symbolic, rather than practical, achievements of Red Orchestra. Rated: 4/5 Jun 24, 2025 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film This non-sensationalist approach allows much more room to address the psychological effects of prison life itself, whilst emphasising the mundanity of much of what happened under the Nazis. Rated: 4/5 Jun 27, 2025 Full Review Kevin Fullerton The List The shy and unprepossessing quality that Liv Lisa Fries brings to Hilde deserves a film with stronger convictions and a greater idea of why this story should be told in the first place. Rated: 3/5 Mar 12, 2025 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) There can be no denying this is a valid and vividly atmospheric work with both its head and heart in the right place. Wayne M From Hilde, With Love is an interesting and well made film, even if it doesn't execute perfectly. It's a true story and feels like an important one. It's the story of Hilde Coppi, a German communist and resistance fighter before and during World War Two. Hilde was a young medical student who becomes part of the Red Orchestra. The film concentrates mostly on her time in prison after she is captured by the Gestapo. Clearly, this is a most harrowing time as you would expect. The film also uses flashbacks to show her carefree time when she met Hans Coppi and how they joined the resistance. The flashbacks for me don't work as well and I think the film would have worked better being told in a linear fashion. But Liv Lisa Fries is wonderful as Hilde, making that alone a worthwhile watch.
