Audience Member Silencio en la Nieve is set during the Second World War when Franco sent troops to help the Nazis on the Russian frontline. I have to say that this is an episode in the war that I am completely ignorant of and it made for an interesting setting. The opening scene is one of the most startling things I've seen in a long time and provides a suitably gruesome prelude to the plot which involves a series of unexplained murders of Spanish soldiers. Former policeman Arturo (played by Juan Diego Botto) is set on the case to investigate the murders and try to explain the gruesome messages that have been carved into the bodies. What he uncovers is a twisted tale leading back to events that happened years before, back in Spain, with a killer motivated by revenge. The backdrop is different and there is enough mystery to keep lovers of thrillers engaged in the plot. Gerado Herero directs the action with skill, making the most of his budget. Juan Diego Botto makes for a good lead and plays an attractive, if stereotypical character. I think if you like "Nordic-Noir" stories, you'll enjoy this one. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Franco sent a force of 18,000 volunteers to help Hitler hold off the Russian army. In an extraordinary scene at the start of the film starving and frozen they come across an ice blocked river and along it are a herd of frozen horses. In among them they find a body with words carved into its chest. And so begins a detective investigation surrounded by cold, smoke, explosions and death. This unhurried and beautifully shot film follows that investigation. It's very much a must see if you get the chance. Also known as Silence In The Snow. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Enjoyable Spanish crime drama - Flawed manucript - Spoiler Alert - If you love B-movies, about criminal investigations, and aren't too picky about details, then you will like this Spanish crime drama. The plot: In 1943 a serial killer is on the loose, among the Spanish soldiers (the so called Blue Division - Division Espanola de Voluntarios) who are fighting alongside the Germans against the Russian on the Eastern front. The only clue is a part of Spanish nursery rhyme that is carved into the chest of the victims. The private Arturo Andrade, a former police inspector, is ordered to investigate the case. The problem? The Blue Division consists of around 18.000 men, and the task is seemingly impossible. It is also extremely difficult for Arturo, being a private, to investigate a crime within the military hierarchy, during wartime. Arturo tries his best , and slowly manages to gather the evidence he needs. Here in lies the flaw of the manuscript; the clues come a bit too cheap. One scene - where Arturo scours through mail inside a truck which is driven at full speed - is particularly awkward. The end is also not the typical CSI-end (we found the killer and sent him to jail). Despite these flaws, I must admit that I enjoyed this movie and recommend it to those who like B-crime dramas. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Klassische Möderjagd in ungewöhnlicher Kulisse...sehr unterhalsam Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member It tries to fit too much in the story but a good movie nonetheless. Buen drama. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
