Japan's Tohoku Region: at a magnitude of 9.0, the strongest earthquake in the country's history strikes, triggering a huge tsunami and carnage that would end up killing thousands of people and displacing many more. It mercilessly engulfs the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Fukushima prefecture, causing a crippling station blackout. Unable to be cooled, the nuclear reactors quickly turn into hydrogen bombs at the brink of explosion. If the power plant is abandoned, Japan's destruction is assured. Facing a life or death situation, the power plant workers known as the "Fukushima 50", including shift supervisor Izaki and plant manager Yoshida, remain on the site until the bitter end. As the world holds its breath, the Fukushima 50 fight for their hometown, their families, and the future of Japan.

Phil Hoad Guardian Watanabe's big-shouldered presence makes this an ample tribute to the man, but the film could have been more than an easy clap for his workers. Rated: 3/5 Mar 8, 2021 Full Review Jamie Healy Radio Times It's a polished, well-intentioned tribute, but one that's slightly constrained by sticking to the facts and its lack of potent human drama. Rated: 2/5 Apr 4, 2024 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine If you interested in what happened in 2011, it is difficult to imagine a better filmed version of the events. Rated: 7/10 Apr 10, 2023 Full Review Joe Lipsett Queer.Horror.Movies. ...a fascinating glimpse at the environmental and political elements that nearly contributed to a catastrophic nuclear disaster. Unfortunately the film struggles to balance its plot and its characters, resulting in pacing and tone issues Rated: 3/5 Apr 18, 2021 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Understandably, this is a worthy depiction of heroism, so the old fashioned filmmaking suits it well, offering human detail behind the headlines. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 18, 2021 Full Review Anthony Kao Cinema Escapist Fukushima 50 is no Grave of the Fireflies or Chernobyl, and that's regrettable given Japan's historical moviemaking prowess. Nota: 6 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/24 Full Review A.L.Jude P At full strength of Japanese culture, the entire movie is full of overacting & chaotic screams yet making chacapony for everything customary Japanese style. The elevated discipline plant employees make an impression that the damage could have minimized. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/31/23 Full Review william k TV drama strives for authenticity in a semi-documentary style, but - although presenting many facts - it appears almost in its staging and with most of the performances (Ken Watanabe the only exception) and seems to have been made only half-heartedly. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Don't expect the drama of Chernobyl, because the most important part of this movie is understanding Japanese work and political cultures. Honor, apologizing, chain of command - this is a great primer if you understand their culture and watch it through those eyes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Somehow a documentary type movie to review the tragedy of the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
