Critics Consensus

Though flawed, the sprawling, messy Gangs of New York is redeemed by impressive production design and Day-Lewis's electrifying performance.

It's a punishing piece of work, this Gangs of New York. Spectacular, brilliant, but punishing-basically, one long brawl... Go to Full Review

The visuals are strong, while the central narrative is weak (a disastrous combination for a long movie). Worst of all, Gangs of New York achieves far too little while trying much too hard. Go to Full Review

Gangs of New York vivifies the past in all of its brutal, misguided glory in the hopes we might glean some better understanding of our forebears’ foibles. Go to Full Review

Plant P @Plantpot 1d I never had any interest in watching this until I recently discovered that being high enables me to see through the movie magic facade of films. I decided to test this on GONY. It held up quite well. The flashbacks to people from when Leo was a kid, just to remind me of who they were, broke immersion though. It's the director saying, "see this guy? Well he was this guy earlier, just so you know". It's also one of those unique films where every actor in Hollywood was probably begging to be in it cos it's a "serious" drama film. This led to what it always leads to: every famous face you recognise trying to do their serious acting by speaking in a shitty foreign accent. No matter how much you try to sound Irish I still see John c mcginley or Cameron Diaz. Acting is not just an accent change. I never gave a shit about DDL, I always thought he was over hyped, but he was the only one who convinced me he could really act. Even while high I could only see his character, not DDL. Good job. Gangs of New York is a film of contradictions: visually breathtaking, with meticulous period design and a roster of A-list actors, yet somehow emotionally hollow. Scorsese’s signature ambition is on full display, but the film tries so hard to be epic that it often collapses under its own weight. Daniel Day-Lewis delivers a performance lauded by many, but to me it feels calculated, overly scripted, and lacking the magnetic unpredictability that made his roles unforgettable. Stylized action sequences and occasional darkly comedic moments provide brief sparks, yet they’re too scattered to anchor the sprawling narrative. For all its craft and scale, Gangs of New York ultimately feels like a misfire — a visually impressive but unremarkable entry in Scorsese’s otherwise stellar filmography. Not one the director will be remembered for. See more Read all reviews
