Critics Consensus

Though flawed, the sprawling, messy Gangs of New York is redeemed by impressive production design and Day-Lewis's electrifying performance.

Namrata Joshi Outlook One of the most provocative films from Hollywood in recent times. Rated: 3/4 Jan 4, 2019 Full Review Amy Taubin Film Comment Magazine It's a punishing piece of work, this Gangs of New York. Spectacular, brilliant, but punishing-basically, one long brawl... Apr 10, 2018 Full Review Barbara Ellen The Times (UK) The visuals are strong, while the central narrative is weak (a disastrous combination for a long movie). Worst of all, Gangs of New York achieves far too little while trying much too hard. Jan 2, 2018 Full Review Julian Singleton Cinapse Gangs of New York vivifies the past in all of its brutal, misguided glory in the hopes we might glean some better understanding of our forebears’ foibles. Jul 12, 2025 Full Review Danilo Castro Next Best Picture What makes “Gangs of New York” so frustrating is that the bones of a great film are visible. Jeff N I love this movie. This gives such a great view and unique view of civil war era New York City. The setting and story was such a breath of fresh air. Cameron Diaz wasn't the best choice for the role, but she did enough to not take anything away from DiCaprio. Nothing could dim the light from Day-Lewis in this film. His performance makes Bill the Butcher one of the greatest movie villains of all time. He rivals Christof Waltz as Hans Landa in Ingorlious Basterds with his unbelievably evil-but-also-so-charming-I-just-can't-hate-him performance. Its a bucket list movie for sure. The setting design and the costumes are just as amazing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/22/25 Full Review Ben A On my non-comedy Mt. Rushmore. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/19/25 Full Review David T Lewis steals the show with this film. Cameron Diaz and DeCaprio needed some help with their accents. Brendan Gleeson gives a fine performance as usual. The sets are pretty good as are the effects. The problem with this movie is it's too long. Too many long and boring still shots which slow the film down making it ponderous. This film could have been shortened by 30 minutes making it more watchable. The history seems accurate especially the draft riots. In short could have been a good film if it was more concise. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/16/25 Full Review Shawn R Solid movie by Mr. Scorsese, as per usual. The acting is strong throughout. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review John T. Daniel Day-Lewis steals every scene. That’s the only reason you need to watch this movie. For anyone interested in American history and the mess that it was in the Civil War-era, Gangs of New York is fine. At points, it seems like the fictitious storyline between Amsterdam and The Butcher gets in the way of a more interesting story surrounding them, but with the backdrop of America on the verge of Reconstruction, it’s easy to get sucked in to the world Scorsese has created. I probably would have liked to have seen a touch more fleshing out of important characters, but the period pieces like this usually hold their own. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review alexander g The first time I saw this film way back in the day I wasnt sure how I felt about it? But after watching it time and time again through the years, I became impressed by the authenticity of the movie. New York City was a very dangerous place back in the mid 1800s. Kind of like the mid 1900s but more primitive. You could see so many things then, that still concern us even today. Unregulated migration over flowing the local population and culture. Poverty, violence, the whole bit. But as you watch the scenes in the background, the costumes, the corruptness, you can feel the grittiness of that time Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Read all reviews
