Critics Consensus

Though flawed, the sprawling, messy Gangs of New York is redeemed by impressive production design and Day-Lewis's electrifying performance.

It's a punishing piece of work, this Gangs of New York. Spectacular, brilliant, but punishing-basically, one long brawl... Go to Full Review

The visuals are strong, while the central narrative is weak (a disastrous combination for a long movie). Worst of all, Gangs of New York achieves far too little while trying much too hard. Go to Full Review

Andre A. @Razsidalor 1d Gangs of New York masterfully delivers some of the more controversial social and demographic growing pains the New World has faced in its development, and it is hands-down my favorite Daniel Day-Lewis movie. See more Aldis H @plever May 20 There were gangs in New York, and they had battles and killed the s*** out of each other, and that's it. There is no narrative except for one minimal thing, which on a scale of one to ten in how intriguing it is, is about a 1.5. Tedious, ultraviolent for violence's sake, i.e., gratuitous, no story and no point. Strong shooting, acting and production, that's why the one star, Otherwise, it's zero. See more Troy R @Grim16 May 6 Ya know, I know it's a classic, but its just too slow and long. Like I had hopes it would change the ending from what I expected, but instead it just drug it on for 2.5hrs. And while its somewhat history, nothing about it gave enough real history to feel like a telling of the past. Like I expect the feeling we are expected to walk away with is, "Life is bigger than your rivalry and while some things might feel important in the moment, you have to pay attention to your community or it could all go to shit." Cause the ending gives that vibe of like, wtf was the point of any of it. And for a movie so highly acclaimed I very much dislike the ending/pointlessness that felt like the films end came with. And while the rivalry existed I actually felt like the story suggested more that there was no rivalry and both parties just kind of stole banners to hide their intentions under. Which is an interesting concept, but not one they made a note to call out. See more Vesna A @Markothebestmovieguy Feb 24 Very good movie deserves a better rating See more Kim P @RT98672688 Feb 23 Interesting film with superb acting by all the "old heads': Day Lewis, Neeson, Gleeson, Broadbent, Reilly, Graham, etc. Although DiCaprio was good, his dialect coach probably wasn't happy. Even more so for Diaz, although she was fine and doesn't deserve all the grief she catches for this role. It's strange...if you say the Godfather movies or Casino or Goodfellas are classics and name one as your all-time favorite, no one bats an eye. But if you tell anyone that you love the movie where Bill the Butcher takes a long knife, stabs a pig carcass hanging on a meat hook several times, and declares to his new young friend "That's a kill" after each violent thrust, those folks get all nervous and start edging towards the door. Weird, huh? See more theguywithawheel23 T @RT70386413 Jan 27 There's a reason there's a distinct difference between 'favourite' and 'best' when talking about a person's preference. To call ‘GoNY’ Scorsese's BEST work is pure sacrilege. While it's set in the city he loves, the purity of his work is stilted. This is not the soul-laid-bare character study of 'Raging Bull' or even the Masterclass Stylings of 'Goodfellas'. But what this is, in my opinion (which is what humbly makes it my FAVOURITE Scorsese film) is one of the greatest examples of storytelling on a vast scale. As conventional as the narrative is, the flare and utter perfection in the details of its setting and the journey of its characters are some of the best work I've ever seen. This is a living, breathing, bloody, sweat dripped creation and you can feel it. Very, VERY few films can really say that, especially ones that come out of the 21st Century. The set of ‘GoNY’ is so grand and alive, you could pick any person out in the 5 points and make a movie out of their story. See more Read all reviews
