Serena Donadoni indieWire What screenwriters [Tom] Morris, Elliot Feld and Jaz Kalkat fail to build is dramatic tension: affable, extremely self-involved Levi easily skates around all obstacles. Rated: C+ Oct 26, 2012 Full Review Cary Darling Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com If given the choice between going to class and seeing the high-school comedy General Education, go with school. Rated: 1/5 Sep 10, 2012 Full Review Barbara VanDenburgh Arizona Republic Defiantly humorless, the comedy is little more than a grab-bag of familiar high school-film cliches populated with bland characters played by barely-there actors. It was clearly a labor of love for no one. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 30, 2012 Full Review Peter Canavese Groucho Reviews What have I learned? High school movies can be duller—and more sour—than previously thought possible...The least generic element of General Education is its openly hostile attitude toward gay people. [Blu-ray] Rated: 0/4 Oct 2, 2012 Full Review Frank Lovece Film Journal International A technically impressive tapioca of a movie, this bland indie seriocomedy may serve as an early springboard for a couple of talented young actors, but little else. Aug 30, 2012 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue The film feels like a strained collection of outtakes from other comedies about teenage nerds and dysfunctional families. Audience Member "General Education" Is Not Funny. Okay? I'm Just Gonna Say It. I'll Say It Again. "General Education" Is Not Funny! It's Poor Comedy With A Badly-Written Script & Characters Played By Unrecognizable Names That Aren't Even Attempted To Be Made Interesting. There's A Ton Of Clichés That Kick Your Ass, The Characters Are Not Likeable Or Interesting, & Not A Single Joke Made Me Laugh. Not 1! And As For The Story, It's Like The Story With "Space Warriors" (2013), For I Feel That I've Seen & Heard This Story A Bajillion Times! It's Written Poorly, It's Painfully Clichéd, It's Boring, The Characters Are Bland, Or Jerks, Or Must Have Some Issues Going On In Life. So, Yeah, Needless To Say, This Movie Is Pretty Much A Bad Movie. If You Had To Choose Between School & Watching "General Education", I'd Advise You Kids To Stay In School. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Flycatching monologue. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member It clearly has a definitive style, as far as the acting is concerned. More of a "30 Rock" hyper-reality than earnest acting/reacting. And the film is also well-shot and professionally made. I tried to like it, but about halfway through, I gave up and fast-forwarded to the end. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Filmed at my local racquet club. Sadly stupid/terrible. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member The only thing comical about General Education is that it was underfunded and misguided propaganda. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member ★★ (out of four) Here comes another teen comedy that wants the audience to cheer for the obnoxious central character and hope he gets away with things simply because he IS the main character. The script is quite predicatable and the situations have all been done and done to death. Levi Collins (Chris Sheffield) thinks he can wisecrack his way through graduation and into a college of his choice on an athletic scholarship. But he has just flunked one of his class and the teacher won't let him graduate unless he takes summer school. Afraid to tell his parents, he convinces the school to let him walk in the ceremony and then he pretends to have a summer job while he is really in class. Of course things come to a head in the end and he must prove himself to everyone. It's been done before...sometimes worse...sometimes better.
