Teenage Rachel (Lindsay Lohan) is a real thorn in the side of her mother, Lilly (Felicity Huffman). More than just rebellious, she is incorrigible. After Rachel crashes a car, Lilly decides to haul the girl off to a place to which she vowed never to return: Her own mother's (Jane Fonda) Idaho home. Georgia, the family matriarch, lives by a strict code and expects all under her roof to do the same. Given structure and purpose, Rachel's anger at the world begins to subside.

Critics Consensus

Comedic and dramatic in all the wrong places, Georgia Rule is a confused dramedy that wastes the talents of its fine cast.

Melissa Anderson Time Out Rated: 1/5 Nov 17, 2011 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader The confused script trades in such heavy topics as alcoholism and child sexual abuse, but every dramatic scene plays like one of those schmaltzy Happy Days moments that inevitably drew a big 'Awwwwww!' from the studio audience. Dec 3, 2007 Full Review Rex Reed Observer Time for a new book by Jane Fonda, and this time I expect a full chapter on how she got snookered into doing Georgia Rule. May 16, 2007 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Georgia Rule reminds as to why Lohan, unlike some of Hollywood's other troublemakers of the late noughties, has been missed. N P I honestly think this is a real and accurate depiction of someone dealing with childhood sexual abuse. It didn't feel tacky or played, too comedic or dramatic. It tied the line between the two, as that is what everyday life is like, even for someone dealing with something extremely traumatic. I think Lindsay Lohan did play the role authentically where I cared for her struggles yet understood why she kept pushing people away with her actions + her sensitivity with her mother. Jane Fonda was compelling as a no-BS grandmother figure that impacted her daughter; thus, how her daughter raised her granddaughter. It's an interesting 3-generational story with women learning to make compromises, listen to each other's vulnerabilities and be kind to one themselves & the world. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/09/24 Full Review Jessica B I completely disagree with most of these reviews. This is a refreshingly honest film about difficult topics. It is not a comedy!! I thought the acting was fantastic and I found the the depiction of the complicated nature of alcholism and sexual abuse were handled in some of the best ways I have ever seen on screen. I would highly recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/13/24 Full Review Daniel P What a very strange movie very emotional very strong storylines but very weird as well Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/07/24 Full Review Peter P Worth creating an account to review. It's not impossible you thought this would be the kind of film that made Lindsay Lohan famous - and wanted to watch only that kind of film - and so were disappointed; to me that would explain the reviews complaining about its treatment of its subject matter. The reviews are right about how entertaining were both Lindsay Lohan as uberslut, and fabulous Jane Fonda, trying to wash your mouth out to make room for some more family values. If this was a film with a message, it was about forgiveness in all its forms, making its central point of the film with deftness and lightness of touch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/07/24 Full Review Aida M Impressive performance of the leading ladies! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review Kyle E It has great performances from its leads, but it was uncomfortable of how it handles child abuse Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews
