Critics Consensus

Thanks to the cast, Ghostbusters 2 is reasonably amusing, but it lacks the charm, wit, and energy of its predecessor.

Henry Sheehan Chicago Reader Murray's character sits firmly at the center of the film, and makes it part of a series, rather than just another sequel. Rated: 2/4 May 11, 2022 Full Review Kathleen Carroll New York Daily News The sequel is, on the whole, a fairly mechanical spook show, filled with grinning ghosts that are definitely ghoulish but hardly menacing. Jun 15, 2015 Full Review Nick Schager The Screengrab Effectively slimed everyone's fond memories of the original. Apr 7, 2009 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Ghostbusters II unexpectedly manages a mix of loud laughs with suspense. [Full review in Spanish] Jul 12, 2022 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins In general, it has the same look and feel, but the energy and enthusiasm have waned. Rated: 6/10 Sep 6, 2020 Full Review Colette DeDonato Common Sense Media Murray's in his prime here as one of four fearless slime fighters in a sequel that is just about as funny and entertaining as the original. Rami A As a sequel, it's simply adequate. There was hardly anything new, just retreading old plot points from the first movie, making it seem like the studio didn't care about making the sequel. You think after the first one's creativity and success the studio would've at least considered trying something new with the sequel and actually caring about it? Instead, we were left with a recycled storyline that lacked the fresh energy that made the original special. The characters felt flat, as if they were just going through the motions rather than experiencing any real growth or development. The chemistry that was so apparent in the first film seemed forced this time around. Additionally, the humor and emotional stakes missed the mark, leaving the audience wanting more depth and originality. It's disappointing to see a franchise that had so much potential take the easier route, prioritizing familiarity over innovation. In a landscape filled with sequels and reboots, it’s crucial for studios to strive for originality, so audiences don’t feel like they’re watching the same movie twice. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review da butler2008 a This movie was ass bro. ass as fuck Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Obi-wan K worse then the original by FAR Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review David H Horribly underrated when compared to the first film but it’s still amazing and funny Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review David P This movie often carries a bad reputation, however, I feel it is a worthy followup to the original. The cast really gets to shine as they expand on their characters and we get a new menacing villain in the form of Vigo. The visual effects are also a bit more polished than the original. It's a fun, entertaining ride from start to finish that carries on the legacy of the original. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review Audience M Despite falling ever so slightly short of the high bar set by its predecessor - which is no disgrace - Ghostbusters 2 remains a more than worthy sequel which carries a warm message about the power of humanity. If anything, the chemistry between these much loved characters is stronger, the relationships even tighter - and the villains just as memorable.
