Critics Consensus

Thanks to the cast, Ghostbusters 2 is reasonably amusing, but it lacks the charm, wit, and energy of its predecessor.

Murray's character sits firmly at the center of the film, and makes it part of a series, rather than just another sequel. Go to Full Review

The sequel is, on the whole, a fairly mechanical spook show, filled with grinning ghosts that are definitely ghoulish but hardly menacing. Go to Full Review

Romas M @Romas 5d Greetings from Lithuania. "Ghostbusters II" (1989) is not as good film as the first one was by far. On it's own it is just an OK flick. Special effects even for the time were nothing to really write home about, and in 2026 they look like a product of its era. I've seen way better even from a film that were released way earlier then 1989. Second instalment is also not as funny as the first one by far. It is more family friendly and gone as all more rude jokes. The premise with the main villain is silly and way less interest then in a first one. Overall, still an OK flick, "Ghostbusters II" is big let done in comparison with the excellent first one. Still not the worst sequel, but that is the best i can say about it. See more PeteOD @Peteodinri Dec 31 I saw the first one in the theater twice in one day. It was hot, and we didn't have air conditioning, so my dad took the day off from work and brought us. Nope, we didn't pay for the second showing. That Halloween, my brother and I made our own packs out of baking pans and stuff my dad had in his work van. Every time we went to the library in our home of Providence, we searched for ghosts. So to say we were fans is an understatement. That's why when we saw this one, we claimed joy while secretly knowing it was missing something. Over the years, I've become fond of it, but it's certainly not the movie the first one was. The first half is a little slow, but then it picks up in the back half See more Tom F Nov 29 Not the least needed sequel ever, but nothing special either. See more Read all reviews
