What to Know

Critics Consensus

A retread of A Christmas Carol, featuring Matthew McConaughey in a retread of his Dazed and Confused role, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past lacks originality, humor, and any semblance of charm.

matthias s *Ghosts of Girlfriends Past* is such a fun ride! Sure, it's a cliché and totally predictable, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need—a light, feel-good rom-com. The cast is amazing—Matthew McConaughey is perfect as the womanizing lead, and Jennifer Garner brings so much heart. And let’s not forget the hilarious supporting cast, especially Michael Douglas as the cheeky ghost mentor. The movie’s twist on Dickens’s *A Christmas Carol* is clever, and the jokes land really well. Yes, it’s pretty demeaning towards women at times, but that’s literally the point—to show how toxic that behavior is and why it needs to change. Honestly, it’s much better than people give it credit for. There’s humor, some emotional moments, and a lot of charm. It’s just pure, entertaining fluff. If you’re in the mood for something predictable but fun, this one’s a solid choice! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Munkhchimeg T Adventurous to find the true love. I agree with it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Avalon T Good movie. Great acting. Very entertaining movie. Not sure why the ratings aren't way higher. I've watched this twice -loved it each time. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/09/24 Full Review Dinos K classic stupid rom-com, The fact that the story is about Christmas adds nothing to the movie Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/24 Full Review Ram L Not mushy, but romantic; not laugh-out-loud, but sprinkled with funnies—that's what a lovely rom-com should be, and that's what this movie is. It's so thoroughly entertaining, I pretty much have just one phrase for the movie—close to five stars. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Texyz T OMG, this is an awesome piece of work, from the casting, to script and AMAZING depth of clever dialogue, to the directing. Outstanding soundtrack. I literally cannot believe the 'Audience' rates this so low. I've never seen such an underrated movie. Once a year for me and it gets better every time.
