Gaston (Louis Jourdan) is a restless Parisian playboy who moves from one mistress to another, while also spending time with Gigi (Leslie Caron), a precocious younger friend learning the ways of high society. The platonic relationship between Gaston and Gigi changes, however, when she matures, but the possibility of something lasting seems unlikely since he won't commit to one woman. Gigi refuses to be anyone's mistress, however, and Gaston must choose between her and his carefree lifestyle.

Critics Consensus

It may not be one of Vincente Minnelli's best, but the charming and flawlessly acted Gigi still offers enough visual and musical treats to satisfy.

Mar 25, 2022 Full Review Christopher Lloyd The Film Yap A gorgeous and colorful Parisian romp, though the musical that won the 1958 Oscar for Best Picture hasn't aged particularly well, especially in its gender dynamics. Rated: 4/5 Nov 13, 2023 Full Review Mark Johnson Awards Daily Nobody captures Parisian romantic musicals quite like Vincente Minnelli did, so if you can get past the huge gap in age differences (she’s only 16), there is a lot of charm and beauty in the film. David W Gigi features an intriguing premise that offers visually pleasing portrayals of Belle Époque Paris. While the musical pieces are well integrated into the film and story, I found them to largely be unmemorable. This was unfortunate, as the production team’s focus on the musical aspect took precedence over plot and character development. Despite its impressive awards and being featured in the National Film Registry, it’s not to my taste. I would only watch this again in certain circumstances. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review Kimm A This has been my favorite movie since I saw it in the early eighties. I didn't even understand the whole film because I was a tween and k still loved it. If you do not like musicals, don't watch it. If you love musicals, it is a must see. If you love turn of the century Paris or European history when cars had JUST started arriving in public. Watch it. Plus, they opened Maxim's just for the film. (It was closed for many years.) Just watch it to have a wonderful laugh and listen to beautiful people singing about things that aren't necessarily so beautiful. ("I don't understand the Parisians!") Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review alan g Nice musical about Paris at the run of the 19th century. Outdated but fun. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review Alec B Some of the Lerner are Lowe songs are legitimately good, but there just isn't much else here that I find all that appealing, even as a fan of musicals. That might simply be a result of how poorly the romance has aged. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/13/23 Full Review Terry S If you want to take a trip back to the schmaltz of the 50's this is the film for you ! Totally unrealistic and romantic to a fault but populated by some of the brightest bygone stars. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/30/23 Full Review Greg N A classic!!! Louis Jordan and Leslie Caron are spectacular, not to mention the timeless music! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
