Gaston (Louis Jourdan) is a restless Parisian playboy who moves from one mistress to another, while also spending time with Gigi (Leslie Caron), a precocious younger friend learning the ways of high society. The platonic relationship between Gaston and Gigi changes, however, when she matures, but the possibility of something lasting seems unlikely since he won't commit to one woman. Gigi refuses to be anyone's mistress, however, and Gaston must choose between her and his carefree lifestyle.

Critics Consensus

It may not be one of Vincente Minnelli's best, but the charming and flawlessly acted Gigi still offers enough visual and musical treats to satisfy.

The outfits were nice and the scenes of Paris were great. See more Russ G Feb 11 Modern audiences are right to condemn this for its utter objectification of women, especially teens. Times have changed, and to say this hasn't aged well is an understatement. "Thank Heaven for little girls," indeed. See more Lon C Dec 20 Gigi truly deserved winning all 9 of its Oscar nods. The mystery is why none of its four principal actors received a nomination. Leslie Caron should have been nominated for Best Lead Actress. Changes are, Maurice Chevalier would have gotten a supporting nod if he hadn't received top billing along with Caron and Louis Jourdan. Hermione Gingold really should have gotten a supporting nod, as well. And Jourdan is spot on as Gaston. See more David W 10/12/2024 Gigi features an intriguing premise that offers visually pleasing portrayals of Belle Époque Paris. While the musical pieces are well integrated into the film and story, I found them to largely be unmemorable. This was unfortunate, as the production team’s focus on the musical aspect took precedence over plot and character development. Despite its impressive awards and being featured in the National Film Registry, it’s not to my taste. I would only watch this again in certain circumstances. See more Read all reviews
