What to Know

Critics Consensus

Nouvelle Vague master Claude Chabrol balances subtle stabs of humor and biting class criticism to explore a love story and the seedier side of the haute bourgeois.

Cosmo Landesman Times (UK) Though the performances are all first-rate, the film is let down by weak characterisation. Still, it's enjoyable, if not exceptional. Rated: 3/5 May 28, 2009 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard One's final impression is that aging legends make unreliable puppet-masters. And that it's all too easy for a desirable young actress to be left dangling in mid-air. Rated: 3/5 May 22, 2009 Full Review Wally Hammond Time Out This is one of Chabrol's most elegant, acerbic and heartfelt entertainments in years. Rated: 4/6 May 22, 2009 Full Review Jason Best Movie Talk The film's surface realism won't fool anyone: it's clear that The Girl Cut in Two is a fable, a dark modern-day fairy tale about innocence and corruption, power and illusion. Nov 22, 2020 Full Review Kelly Jane Torrance Washington Times Leave it to master Claude Chabrol, though, to make a film about the varieties of corruption and depravity without so much as a glimpse of nudity. Rated: 3/4 Dec 13, 2018 Full Review Dan Sallitt Senses of Cinema A few flashes of insight or giddy humour, conveyed via portentous close-ups or fast cutting, remind us of Chabrol's directorial power; but he seems rather too casual behind the camera lately. Audience Member Lackluster love triangle tragedy in which almost nothing works. Which will an attractive, upwardly bound weathergirl choose, the old writer jackass or the young spoiled jackass? When the girl is this airheaded and indescerning about jumping into bed, I didn't even care. The rivalry that supposedly already exists between the men is just as flimsy and ineffectual. Claude Chabrol has made some provocative examinations of relationships - obsessive jealousy in L'Enfer for example - but everything staged here is extremely limp. That includes insinuations of kinky sex with the old guy and maybe his friends, nothing is ever made clear but it's just another example of the director working far too timidly with this material. The overly obvious visual metaphor to end the film makes for an appropriate ham-fisted finale to this tripe. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Really boring. Not the most boring ever (Lost in Translation is unsurpassed yet), but boring indeed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member sagnier Is divine. strangely riveting; rather enjoyed it in spite of the rather loathable charles saint -denis character & the bourgeoiseness . or maybe it was precisely the bourgeoiseness i enjoyed watching. a good soap . Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member (***): Intriguing throughout. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member This French romance film pretends to be much more than it actually is. The story surrounds a girl played by Ludivine Sagnier, as she is chased by an elderly author and a narcissistic spoiled heir to a pharmaceutical company. All 3 of those central characters are hard to relate to, and the audience feels no connection to any of them. Then, an array of seemingly random events occur that don't particularly need to happen. Things just seem drab and dry and move on to the next scene of romance, making it no better, IMO, than the dreary Nicolas Sparks stuff that America throw out every year. And the saw scene at the end was an attempt to include allegory that made little sense and seemed incredibly forced. Not worth trying to find.
