What to Know

Critics Consensus

Marvelously directed by Sebastian Lelio and beautifully led by a powerful performance from Paulina Garcia, Gloria takes an honest, sweetly poignant look at a type of character that's all too often neglected in Hollywood.

Jenny Catchings Bitch Media Gloria is magnetic and radiant... I left the theater feeling a little sad that a female lead like Garcia and a film like Gloria are both so rare. Jan 20, 2021 Full Review Maria M. Delgado Sight & Sound The film's pulse comes in many ways from Garca's brave and beautiful central performance. Jan 5, 2015 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle We don't make movies in America like Gloria, so we have to import them. I wish we'd import more -- and make a few, as well. Rated: 3/4 Jan 5, 2015 Full Review Erick Estrada Cinegarage Subtle, sometimes too much... However, brining a festive note to characters that others reject and make fun of is always welcome. [Full review in Spanish] Dec 9, 2022 Full Review Jared Mobarak Jaredmobarak.com There's less of an endgame than a scenario allowed to run its course. García is fantastic in the role with an attitude that refuses to stay quiet when something must be said. Rated: 8/10 Mar 14, 2019 Full Review Patrick Gamble CineVue A smart, sensitive and bitterly funny romantic comedy, elegantly played out against the backdrop of a county whose political scars are still very much evident. Shock Therapy R I do not understand the glowing reviews of the "experts". What is there to celebrate? Monotony? Polygamy? Multiplicity? Monogamy? Who cares? The editing was sorely lacking and the grand finale of the movie's namesake was cliche. If we must see Gloria succeed by dancing alone and depending on no one, then bravo! Otherwise, this seems too true to life, which is why movie-goers don't watch reality 📺 Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/12/23 Full Review dave s Divorced for over a decade and working a seemingly dead-end job, Gloria (Paulina Garcia) is a grandmother in search of a partner. Frequenting a local dance hall in search of her quest, she eventually meets and falls in love with Rodolfo (Sergio Hernandez), a mature and loving man who, much to Gloria's chagrin, chooses to mysteriously keep her a secret from his family. The movie works primarily because of the brave performance of Garcia, who tackles the role of a lonely woman with passionate tenacity. While the film does feel like it lags for a bit around the halfway point, it remains a poignant and moving story about loneliness and regret, all leading to an ebullient final scene. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review adam b Not your contemporary romance/drama, it really is anchored by the main actress and the director.
