Critics Consensus

A Good Year is a fine example of a top-notch director and actor out of their elements, in a sappy romantic comedy lacking in charm and humor.

A Good Year is a light snack of comfort-food cinema and Scott’s only comedy— not that there are a huge amount of laughs. Go to Full Review

It's a film from which you'd expect the moon, the stars and the sun. What with an actor like Crowe and a director like Scott. Disappointingly, the talented duo gives you the most wishy-washy film of the year. Go to Full Review

Ridley Scott’s A Good Year is an underappreciated gem that shows us a different side to both the celebrated director and lead star Russell Crowe. Go to Full Review

Enrico S. @Enrico Oct 21 It has flaws, but for whatever reasons it is feel good movie that works for me, it works all the time, better if watched with a glass of wine ice wine. See more Louise C Sep 23 Absolutely awful. For one thing an Australian man trying to play an English man with a shocking accent. Didn’t even see to the end. Didn’t invest in anyone because there was no one to care for. See more Mark P Sep 2 A sweet and funny romance about rehabilitating one's life by going back to the past that made one happy, reconnecting with family, finding love, turning away from hollow greed, making something wholesome, and washing that feast with superb wine from France. The story is heartwarming, the performances fantastic, directed outside the regular course of Ridley's typical vintage to create a specialty bottle. I enjoy this movie because it's human delight to have the protagonist choose the finer and simpler life of love and taste over bottomless desire. See more Eames A. @EamesAgu Sep 1 They don’t make enough movies like this anymore — well made, light comedy — with real movie stars like Crowe and the French lady. It’s easy to make some super serious drama that takes itself seriously, but harder to craft a movie that takes us off the beaten path and at a slower pace. As is the theme of A Good Year. See more Sean C Aug 23 Ridley Scott and cast bring warmth and fun into what is actually a fairly boring, formulaic script. See more John B Aug 10 A Good Year is a lovely film with charming performances from all the cast. Crowe and Coitillard are incredibly sexy and watching it transports you to Provence. Gorgeous film.
