Alan Zilberman Spectrum Culture Q narrates her entire story, and she does not pull punches when talking about the dark episodes of her past. Candid and sometimes funny, she is a natural storyteller so the finest scenes involve her revealing one extraordinary detail after another. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 24, 2025 Full Review Sabina Dana Plasse Film Threat It reveals the shortcomings and hardships of a society often unable to provide for women and women of color who want to succeed with their inherent gifts and talents, in this case, Q’s singing and songwriting. Rated: 8/10 Mar 17, 2025 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) A beautiful tribute to a woman who was larger than life and extremely talented, but who was also, I fear, ahead of her time. Mar 8, 2025 Full Review Jonita Davis The Black Cape (Medium) The film takes us through Diane “Q Lazarus” Luckey’s addiction, homelessness, and even a stint as a sex worker. The writer/singer is candid about her journey, which is only enhanced by her enchanting storytelling. Lucy M This documentary is incredible. Without giving too much away, the way Q and the filmmaker met is magical, and their closeness can be felt throughout the film and lends the film an intimacy rarely seen in documentaries. And then Q narrates her dramatic and colorful life through stories that are at times heartbreaking, at times funny and always moving. with a bare-all style which is refreshing; it makes you realize how much public figures protect their image when being filmed. Q is flawed and fierce and you fall in love with her. Her life story must be heard to be believed. Her music is great and very varied- from rock to house to metal to new wave, all with that powerful voice. Can't wait for this to be on streamers so everyone can see it, I think it will go viral as the world discovers Q. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Steve C The story is a potentially compelling one: filmmaker and fan of vanished singer, in a one-in-a-million chance, stumbles across said singer in a taxi cab. Singer - who turns out to be an extremely compelling as an interview subject - agrees to be subject of documentary. Sadly, the film fails in the most fundamental way. It's really boring. One could look past the deeply mediocre camera work if it was edited in a coherent way, but it wasn't. We go down one path and then another and another. Some we come back to, others we don't. There's just very little life in it. I was thinking that maybe it was just me until, about two-thirds of the way through, we get a scene with Q and her husband and it just leaps off the screen because it's so alive. For those two minutes, it's great. And then, again, it isn't. Maybe another editor can take a run at it? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
