Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A fantastic ride. For the story and its telling, Hou continues to be elliptical in plot and characters. Impressions of the film will come in pieces, parts, fits, and starts. The journey and the mood leave fuzzily outlined impressions on the viewer. And it's marvelous. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Illuminated Taiwan and its urban underclass, mingling, scheming, struggling, scamming. Long, continuous takes add a beautiful rhythm to the film, one of Hou Hsiao-Hsien's best. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member oops. reviewed the wrong one! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Working with a contemporary setting and Taiwan's discontented youth scene allows Hou to flirt with popular gangster movie tropes as well as including the modern sound of Lim Giongs electronic music. In Goodbye South Goodbye, Hou not merely passively observes the events, but also makes sure to involve the viewer through the use of mobile, at times even subjective, camera. Although aesthetically a step forward, Hou still seems preoccupied with time-bound stages of experience, carefully mapping out the differences between now and then. Hou regular Jack Kao, who also co-wrote the script, is in great form here as big brother with increasingly less authority. Another winner from Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
