Critics Consensus

Grease 2 is undeniably stocked with solid songs and well-choreographed dance sequences, but there's no getting around the fact that it's a blatant retread of its far more entertaining predecessor.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com There is a gender-flipped gonzo goofiness to the film that was wildly ahead of its time in ’82 and, sadly, likely remains so today. Rated: 3/4 Jul 21, 2022 Full Review David Denby New York Magazine/Vulture What I want from this material is a stylized rock musical, and what I keep getting are stale Broadway routines. Sep 10, 2020 Full Review Gwen Ihnat AV Club Unlike Grease's "cool" Rizzo (Stockard Channing), Stephanie doesn't have to be mean to anyone who doesn't fit into her Pink Lady standard. She's just cool, period. Feb 27, 2019 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine Grease 2 is a near-unmitigated failure: commercially, creatively, basically entirely. Rated: 3/10 Jul 19, 2022 Full Review Peter Canavese Celluloid Dreams A kind of watered down version of a John Waters movie with unmemorable songs (but Tab Hunter's 'Reproduction' is a stand-out). Rated: 2/4 Jun 28, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Grease 2 has somehow managed to pick up a decent amount of devotees over the decades, which makes me believe there must be hope for the likes of Battlefield Earth and The Hottie & the Nottie. brigitte w The music is awesome and the costumes are bananas good. Two of the most gorgeous humans on the planet and lots of laughs. This movie is so underrated. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/21/22 Full Review Ananda J obviously wanted to love it but it was like wattching fingernails on a chalk board. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/12/24 Full Review luvnelly A mimic of the original movie, no remark can match the original, talented actors eg John Travolta and Olivia newton John... Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Mike P Banal sequel movies like this always seem so desperate; and so wasteful...And this is no exception. ESPECIALLY when they try to completely recast a classic! That's just deadly! I mean, they should have really pushed a little harder to get the original cast back. The rumor I heard was that this was originally going to be called Grease 2: Summer School; and was going to star Stockard Channing and Jeff Conaway...And THAT would have been awesome! Or something with Danny and Sandy again, now in their young adult years, wouldn't have been bad at all! But this just a stale role reversal retread...Now the GIRL is the sexy, cool one, and the BOY is the nerdy outsider...With a brand new stack of hopefuls...And I mean, it never really gets past that original mistake of recasting this story...It all just feels awkward and a little off...It would be like doing Psycho 2 with a different actor playing Norman...Or a Star Wars 2 with a different Luke, Leia and Han. I mean, it just wouldn't work; not when you're playing characters that someone made so iconic. It's just the kiss of death even trying; and so this movie; with it's cast of pretenders, and it's derivative plot; fails. Overall: Thumbs Down 👎 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review leslie b I love this movie, I don't care what anyone says! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/24 Full Review Oguz T It could be a 80's cult movie if it wouldn't stand in the shadows of the original Grease. The music is great, Pfeiffer is a much better cast than Newton John as a teenage dream girl and the movie has lots of problems with the scenario but should have at least the same credit as Dirty Dancing.
