Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Amid its plethora of thick mustaches and stony gazes lies an absorbing piece of Spanish cinema that comes across as a genre stew with a social conscience. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review Sean Woodard Cultured Vultures Peaky Blinders fans may be drawn to the film's period detail and violence, but its character-driven story and methodical pacing may not suit everyone. However, patient viewers may be rewarded. Rated: 8/10 Oct 30, 2019 Full Review Jorge Loser Espinof The film is sometimes a gift for the eyes, but in others, it tends to the imbalance. Yet, its proposal deserves to be well received. Rated: 2/5 Nov 7, 2018 Full Review Ignacio Navarro El antepenúltimo mohicano Especially memorable are the roles of Vicente Romero and Manolo Solo, two villains that their actors endow with a tragic and nuanced air. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Oct 17, 2018 Full Review Javier Ocaña El Pais (Spain) De la Torre seeks an expression that may want to be artistic but is only technical, with a staging of spectacular appearance that hides a rehash of obvious references and nothing original. Pavlos C A touch of social catharsis, so loudly absent from most modern day movies. A bit overly romanticized and some moral stereotypes but ok, I guess we can forgive that. Great photography and cinematography. Also saw other comments mentioning slow pace. Don't agree; A good movie drags you in contemplation and that needs slow. Still though wouldn't call it slow. Just as much. Mostly excited about the attempt for catharsis and atmosphere. A decent European response. European commercial cinema might still be alive. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/15/23 Full Review Late R Despite a great cast, a lovely production design and the occasional burst of violent action, ‘Gun City's' narrative is a mess as it tries to blend together a number of different storylines that address some of Spain's historical problems. I think the main problem is not only too many characters vying for attention, but specifically how superficially they're written, lacking depth and enough screen time to make us care about them -- impassive and short on much of a backstory or personality, Luis Tosar's main character is the worst offender here. The final act does manage to bring things together quite nicely and to a satisfying end, but it's not enough to save the whole film. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/22 Full Review Gianmarco R Double game film done very well and also structured in a curious and interesting way, which manages to entertain and intrigue a lot. Interesting plot but in general the film is perhaps a little too slow but you can stand it well Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/16/21 Full Review Audience Member Confusing Plot City. Good hats, better mustaches. Still not sure what the motives of the main character were. But it was watchable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting, vintage crime, this reminded me to watch peaky blinders once again Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Sometimes it looks a mix of many things (the environment is very achieved) in a story that becomes not very clear, but the atmosphere catches you, somehow.
