Critics Consensus

Equal parts absorbing and educational, Gun Hill Road wears its heart on its sleeve through tender performances that make up for its narrative familiarity.

Gun Hill Road is shot through with performances at once intense and relaxed. Go to Full Review

Feels like it's been workshopped, from its string of coincidences to its tidy downbeat conclusion in which Green stabs at irony with a dull knife. Go to Full Review

Before some predictable, freedom-threatening recidivism on Enrique's part, the film exhibits a simultaneously anthropological and sensitive interest in Michael's day-to-day life... Go to Full Review

Films like Gun Hill Road with Latino leads are a rarity in independent gay cinema. The film further sets itself apart in that one of its leads is transgendered on screen as well as in real-life. Go to Full Review

Though the story follows a familiar trajectory, Gun Hill Road offers a lot of fresh insight into the day-to-day transgender experience. Go to Full Review

02/09/2019 Daddy issues. Young man's struggle for sexual identity is caught up in the loss of his dad to prison. See more 09/11/2014 Enrique returns home from a stint in prison to find his homelife has changed. His wife is hiding an affair she had whilst he was away and his son Michael is going through a sexual/gender awakening. The bigoted father tries hard to grasp hold of his masculine ideals, whilst Angela tries her best to keep her family dynamic together. Though the story of a man returning home from prison to find shit has changed is rather well trodden ground, the tale of Michael's transexuality and the gender politics it brings on is a nice angle. Harmony Santana is a triumph as Michael and gives the character real empathy. The cast as a whole does very well, but I found Enrique's arc to be rather flat and his story should have held equal heading with that of his son. The juxtaposition of the two characters could have been so much more interesting. It just fell a little flat here. An intriguing tale of sexual transformation, but not much more. See more 08/19/2014 strong movie watching this makes me see Esai Morales need more work. Such a talent actor we miss out on. See more 07/06/2014 Pfff... Not Interesting... See more 03/23/2014 another pic about cons trying to re-enter society after serving their time shitty ending though See more 07/26/2013 Una mezcla explosiva de problemas sociales y familiares. Muy buenas, o mas bien realistas actuaciones de algo que no vemos muy seguido en el cine con enfoque latino. Me recordo un poco a Secret Games. See more Read all reviews
