Allan C @RT15713161 Jun 19 Fun corny Tim Holt oater Guns of Hate (1948) *** Cowpokes Tim Holt and his faithful half Mexican, half Irish sidekick, Richard Martin as Chico Rafferty, are wrongly accused of murder and must escape from jail to clear their names. It’s nothing original, but it’s a sturdy little RKO western programmer. I laughed out loud at one part when Holt makes his sidekick angry, to which Rafferty tells him, "If you talk like that, you get my Irish up!" I didn’t realize it while watching the film, but the great actor Jason Robards’ father, Jason Robards Sr., appears in a small supporting role. As an aside, I’ve always been fascinated by Tim Holt. He’s a talented actor who appeared in a number of prestigious films, such as Orson Welles’ THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS and John Huston’s TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, but made his career primarily as a hugely popular cowboy in a long-running series of low-budget westerns for RKO. He stuck with that, which earned him a lot of money, but little prestige. See more Read all reviews
