Alonso Duralde The Advocate Guys and Balls is so insanely predictable -- and its gay sensibility is such a throwback to at least 20 years ago -- that it's mostly a cringe-worthy experience. I call foul. May 24, 2022 Full Review G. Allen Johnson San Francisco Chronicle It's surefire entertainment: loopy and predictable, but tremendously likable. Rated: 3/4 May 26, 2006 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety A by-the-numbers ensemble dramedy that hits every underdog and gay-fish- out-of-water cliche on the nose. May 25, 2006 Full Review Don Willmott Filmcritic.com a by-the-book redemption-through-sports story with a few laughs, a few clichs, and those few annoying stereotypes that could have easily been omitted Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 1, 2006 Full Review Maitland McDonagh TV Guide If there's a gay cliche who doesn't flounce through this feel-good German comedy, he must have been out of town when the casting call went out, but its fundamental good nature is tough to resist. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/23 Full Review Audience Member A cute and fun German language film that warms the heart but utterly misses any opportunity to develop (or even acknowledge!) the angst of exclusion, loneliness, uncertainty and injustice that motivate the primary aspects of this film. The sports action scenes are much better than most similar LGBT soccer films (e.g., Kickoff), but the team-building aspect of the story is not sufficiently developed. "Guys & Balls" is a pleasant film, but it is not very satisfying. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Maximilian Bruckner justly won and German film critics award for his breakthrough endearing and forceful performance as Ecki. The film is about a gay soccer team, dealing with the relationship of manhood, sports, and homosexuality, a mix no safeguarded Hollywood product would ever dare touch. In a sense it is a classic sports movie, cheering on the underdog to victory, but this film shows that it sometimes takes a homosexual to make a real man. The dialgoue is at times so taut and quick-witted as to remind one of a classic screwball comedy (think Bringing Up Baby), but at other times must lapse into the sentimental to make its point. An adorable little film, that Bruckner definitely makes worth watching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member A lot of fun... if you don't mind reading your movies :) Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Funny film with a heart, gets all the gay stereotypes in there but the mix works. It's a football version of the Full Monty, with a gay love story. One of my all time favorite films Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie was pretty cute, with enough sports action to make it interesting.
