damontomlinson Watched this as a kid in the late 70's and it was still brilliant watching it over 30 years later. A good story with great characters and beautiful scenery....all in all you get lost in it. Oliver Reed is fab and Michael J Pollard was a character that stuck in my head for many years. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review John K I wanted to give it 5 stars, but decided to penalize it half a star just due to the fact that there should not be a feel good war movie, especially one set in WWII, but this is exactly what it is. Oliver Reed is perfect as the POW British Soldier charged to evac an elephant from the German Zoo he is indentured at for the duration of the conflict. He is escorted by a gun toting German quasi psycho who likes to get drunk a lot and as the journey wears on Oliver's Hannibal character (not his real name but a nod to the warrior Hannibal who transported Pachyderms through the Alps to fight the Romans in BC) manages to kill him and takes off with Lucy, the elephant's name and a fraulein he is sort of romantic with, but ends up sort of betraying him, then ends up sort of rescuing him, dying for her troubles, in a great, exciting climax before ending on a very sweet note. Its kind of a road film, showing regular people enjoying life while there is a war about to descend down on them in due course, but in the meantime everyday life goes on. Its offbeat, sweet, occasionally violent, but never loses focus of its central theme of ordinary people caught up in extraordinary circumstances. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/18/23 Full Review Audience Member This is, and has always been my absolute favourite movie of all time. Watching it again tonight. Love how no so called Critics have ever seen it Lol! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Fantastic movie - a classic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Great WW2 era adventure. Oliver Reed and the rest of the cast are all fantastic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Oliver reed at his best. Great family film although the violence against the Germans makes it unsuitable for younger viewers. Worth a watch. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
