Veering between gleaming, clean-lined techno-lust and a punkier, junk-space aesthetic, it really is a marvel to look at: an artfully dazzling distillation of videogamey flash, proggy space-majesty and Final Fantasy flounce. Go to Full Review

This digitally animated Japanese space adventure is as po-faced as they come. Go to Full Review

The spectacular visuals and fights are the real stars. Go to Full Review
Simon Foster Screen-Space (Substack) 01/28/2014
The dazzling visuals and immense scale employed by director/animator Shinji Aramaki adequately compensate (just) for the derivative narrative in his update/reboot of Leiji Matsumoto's visionary 1970's space-opera, 'Harlock'. Go to Full Review

Anderson O @Platinum2027 Jan 23 Solid action sequences, not as great performances. But the motivation of freedom and what the Space Pirates fight for, brought me back a few times for Harlock Space Pirate. See more Loïs O 12/21/2024 Ce n'est pas un mauvais film mais il ressemble à des cinématiques de jeux vidéo. De plus le film est relativement lent See more 01/08/2022 A real disgrace, Japanese writers forgot how to build a decent story several years ago and their animation is to the point of death. This is an insult to all what Original harlock really was. Not this sad piece of rubbish for sure. See more 04/24/2020 An absolutely brilliant movie, very surprised and very pleased we found it. See more 02/04/2020 A personal favourite between me and my brother, one of the edgier CGI films i've seen, with an almost grim dark setting with anime inspired locations. If nothing else, come for the visuals and stay for the fights, because as far as these types of films go this is certainly amongst the most visually stunning, action packed and morally riveting. Provided you don't look too hard at the pot-hole story, I would certainly recommend for the battle and music alone. See more 05/02/2019 I have been a Captain Harlock groupie since Captain Harlock and the Queen of 1000 years. I write fan fiction for the character, originally conceptualized by Leiji Matsumoto as a Freeman/Freedom Fighter/Pirate Knight who fought for "freedom, and things he valued in his heart." This film takes the honor bound, noble, and stoic fighter for freedom and plunks him into a story line that he doesn't fit. At all. His canon character's main reasons for fighting is to protect Earth, and her people. In his story we usually see his effect on other people as hope, and of overcoming impossible odds. In this movie, lets just say that this Harlock has... issues. And his honor, love of the Earth and her people are totally dumped. Instead of fighting tyranny and aliens who mean to harm Earth and her people, he now mourns a terrible consequence to a stupid action on his part. The movie realized Harlock physically as I've always imagined him, and the other characters are brought to life beautifully. The music soars. The world he lives in is brought to life in a beautiful way. The Arcadia is badass. Harlock is badass. Lots of cool space battles. But... How do you kill an anime classic anti hero? By making his character completely different from canon, performing actions his original would have died to prevent. I so wanted to love this movie. See more Read all reviews
