David Chute Variety This comedy reinvigorates the familiar conventions of Bollywood's signature genre. Mar 23, 2014 Full Review Nicole Herrington New York Times While the film starts out as a seemingly fresh take on the romantic comedy, it is saddled with numerous contrivances and the clichd trappings of the genre: big weddings, wayward souls and quick-to-judge elders. Feb 10, 2014 Full Review Rahul Desai Mumbai Mirror Parineeti as Meeta is one for the ages; she is the powering force behind a well-mounted film which, for most of its 141 minutes, is a timely shot in the arm for a traditionally mishandled genre. Rated: 3/5 Feb 6, 2019 Full Review Manjusha Radhakrishnan Gulf News (UAE) Watch this if you want to see a love story with lovers that are not squeaky clean. Aug 31, 2017 Full Review Shilpa Jamkhandikar Reuters Hasee Toh Phasee is an unusual romantic comedy, but for some powerhouse performances and genuinely good humour, this film is worth it. Audience Member watch full amazing movie online on https://glamcinema.com/ Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Audience Member This comedy reinvigorates the familiar conventions of Bollywood's signature genre. Lively, funny and discreetly sentimental, "Hasee toh phasee" presents a special challenge to self-consciously hard-boiled American movie fans — and movie critics. This debut feature by Vinil Mathew, a director of stylish TV commercials, is simply too well made and too enjoyable to be reflexively dismissed by the watchdogs of cool. When fresh content is clubbed with young talented actors, the outcome can be awesome! Seeing the lively promos and songs on TV, one pretty much knows what the result on the big screen will be. A strong script, focused director, talented actors, right music and all this backed by experienced producers leads into an enjoyable watch. Nikhil (Siddharth Malhotra) is a young, mischievous boy-next-door who lives with his parents but finds it tough to adjust with his strict police officer dad. Hence he is always on the run, spending time with friends and in the evening he eventually ends up traveling to other cities with his buddies. Meeta (Parineeti Chopra) is also staying away from her family because she is different from the rest.. too different actually. Nikhil is in a serious relationship with Meeta's sister Karishma played by Adah Sharma. He bumps into Meeta while she is on the go, he helps her leap the compound wall. He has no idea that she is actually his girlfriend's sister because she is not someone the family likes to discuss openly. In her first brief interaction with Nikhil, she asks him if he would like to accompany her to Goa. Both move on and their paths cross when Meeta is back in town to attend their wedding. She has no place to stay and then Nikhil has to find her one. Time for a stupid scene, she is put up in a dump in Govandi because all the hotels in Mumbai are full. Really? But at this point the story reaches a turning point and Nikhil's focus shifts from Karishma to her sister Meeta. If someone asks me to place bets on one actor who will surely go a long way in Bollywood I would place all my money on Parineeti Chopra. She is the best talent among the young female actors. Her acting skills, unmatched energy and the vibrant personality stand out and she works hard and delivers every time. This was not an easy one, she is more of a nerd. She pulls it off and how! In one of the scenes, she confidently looks at Nikhil and suggests to him that he should marry her and not her sister. The scene is convincing only because of her confidence. Siddharth Malhotra is no less than a show stealer. Surely the role was written keeping him in mind but he does show solid seriousness in his acting abilities. Enough has been said about his looks, now his acting does the talking. The two are as different as chalk and cheese but as they say opposites attract. They in fact work wonders! Adah Sharma performs well too. Have to mention actor Anil Mange who is hilarious in the comedy scenes. Music by Vishal Shekhar is perfect! From the opening song Shake it like Shammi to Drama Queen and even the Punjabi wedding song, the music keeps you entertained throughout and sets the mood of the film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member If not really one of the best, "Hasee Toh Phasee" is really one of the quirkiest romantic comedies out of the Bollywood panorama. In Vinil Mathew we have all the kink of a promising, sprawling and distinctive voice: his filmmaking abilities are competent and pave the way in a technically brilliant piece of work, along with an immersive performance delivered by an electrifying Parineeti Chopra (and I really liked Siddharth Malhotra as well). Despite being technically so well-detailed, it is honestly a real slog in the second half. The Gujrati-ness doesn't provide any sizzles to the film. It's not really a bad film, but it's baffling that it might have been a drag had it been handled by a less responsible director, consider a Luv Ranjan, due to the simplistic premise and an idea too convoluted. But if you, just like me, really submit to the idea of a fun rom-com, give it a chance and perhaps you won't be disappointed. Not at all. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member The leading actors are good. The oversimplification of being on the autism spectrum, which Parineeti's character, Meeta, is possibly characterized as, is problematic. However, the egregious, unforgivable part of the film is the unaddressed violence against women. Multiple times in the film, Meeta is open-handed slapped by her uncle. The instances of assault and go unaddressed by male or female characters in the film. It is deeply disappointing. The guy gets the girl and the girl gets the guy, but the sting of the normalization of violence against women is felt by the audience long after the closing credits. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Best movie Eveeeeeeeeerrrrrrr! Too good. Parineeti's acting is mind-blowing and deserves an Oscar. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved it! Such a fun and cute movie and the couple has great chemistry - makes you root for them!
