What to Know

Critics Consensus

Funnier and more gleefully gory than most slasher sequels, Hatchet II aims for so-bad-it's-good territory, but can't quite hack it.

This is basically an excuse to watch skulls crushed like melons, guts ripped from body cavities and torsos halved. And such things go on with relentless and disgusting regularity. Go to Full Review

A rehash of the first movie that felt more like it was cashing in on the debut entry being a moderate success, with the filmmakers getting about as far as throwing the "2" into the title as far as developing a script. Go to Full Review

Jonathan O Aug 28 I had fun with this sequel but I really hate the opening scene with a guy vomit is so unwatchable and gross. See more SkyRo P @TheMovieSearch Jun 4 Let’s be honest—Hatchet was a mess, and Hatchet II somehow manages to be just as bad, if not worse. The entire Victor Crowley concept feels ridiculous and forced, and it baffles me that this has become a full-on franchise. The film leans heavily into gore and shock value, but forgets the basics: compelling storytelling, character development, and a coherent plot. It’s all blood and brutality without any real substance behind it. I honestly believe this franchise is one of the weakest in modern horror history. What’s especially frustrating is that, despite now having multiple sequels and even a spin-off, Hatchet still hasn’t earned a place among horror icons. Meanwhile, characters like Art the Clown from Terrifier have come out of nowhere and already established themselves as cult favorites. Victor Crowley just doesn’t have the presence, the intrigue, or the menace to stand out in the genre. The direction is sloppy, the writing is laughably bad, and the acting is about as wooden as it gets. I couldn’t find a single redeeming quality in this film—and that’s saying something, considering how low my expectations were after the first one. At this point, I’ve sat through two of these movies, and while I’ll likely watch the rest for the sake of reviewing them, I’m genuinely dreading the experience. Based on what I’ve seen so far, I can’t recommend Hatchet II, or the franchise in general. It’s a brutal slog for all the wrong reasons. See more John F 10/07/2024 Obvious that Evil Dead 2 was an inspiration, and while it comes up short of that horror/comedy classic Hatchet 2 does pretty well. Bad acting and cheesy lines abound, but there are a few decent moments, and the presence of Harris and Todd provides horror fans plenty to chew on, and it gives us an origin story and some inventive kills under 90 minutes. See more Ricardo d 07/04/2024 Embora o filme seja péssimo, é bom ver Tom Holland e Tony Todd atuando juntos. See more Read all reviews
