Critics Consensus

Kristen Wiig's vibrant performance is almost worth the price of admission -- and it has to be, because Hateship Loveship doesn't have much else going for it.

Minneapolis Star Tribune Wiig's underplaying, a repressed otherworldly Sissy Spacek sort of thing, has its moments of humor, but this proud, simple woman is never for an instant comic. Rated: 3/4 May 1, 2014 Full Review Bill Goodykoontz Arizona Republic It doesn't take long for us to get lost in Wiig's thorough portrayal of a dowdy housekeeper who must soldier on in the face of a cruel prank to find some kind of love in her life. P. H Interesting flick. Even though Kristen Wiig is in it, it's not a comedy. So don't expect one, and you probably won't be disappointed like some of the reviewers here. I liked Kristen Wiig, but I liked Guy Pierce the best; however a lot of the acting is "soft played." Facial expressions somtimes said more than words would. I enjoyed this film. It always seems, however, that when a reviewer is expecting too much from a movie, they end up being dissapointed. I didn't expect too much, but TMC (Premium Cable) gave it 3 out of 4 stars so I figured it was worth watching. It was. This is probably why I no longer go to a movie theater. Why waste your money paying to see a film when it eventually comes to HBO, STARZ, ENCORE, FLIX, TMC, or CINEMAX. That's what Premium Cable is for. You don't waste your time in a movie theater watching something that you're not necessarily in the mood for -- or you were expecting something entirely different. Movie theaters are really for the big blockbuster films that need the giant screen, big surround sound, and incredible visuals. Hateship Loveship isn't that kind of movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review KB B This was such an engaging movie with good acting and storyline. Kristen With was superb in this. It's definitely worth the watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review Dow O I just streamed this 2015 movie despite the low audience and critics' ratings - and I'm so glad I did. It's a quiet, thought-provoking little film with excellent acting, pacing, and direction. Although the plot is simple, I found the film compelling and satisfying. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/24 Full Review Steve D I just found it all really nasty, Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Jerod S Wiig is so good at making you feel uncomfortable for her character, which is the crux of Hateship Loveship. When she naively falls in love via email with a bad-boy deserter of a father, she takes her cleaning skills to him. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/16/23 Full Review Audience Member How did this get bad reviews wtf!?! Kristin wigg was phenomenal and the story was pretty sad/touching 3.6 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/22 Full Review Read all reviews
